Metro Finally Breaks Ground On Subway Extension

L.A. officials finally broke ground Friday on local government's white whale: an extension of the Metro Purple Line destined for stops at Wilshire and La Brea, Wilshire and Fairfax, and Wilshire and La Cienega.

Building the 3.9 miles of new track will take until 2023. That might seem like a long time, but on the other hand, it takes about eight years to drive that stretch of Wilshire on a Friday afternoon anyway. We'd say it evens out.

There are two more extensions of the the Purple Line that might possibly maybe happen in our lifetime, taking the line to the Veterans Affairs complex in Westwood by 2035.

Well, it's not the vaunted "Subway to the Sea," but then again, maybe global warming will raise the ocean level enough to move the beach to Brentwood.
