12-Year-Old Boy Scout Shoots Himself In The Head At Summer Camp [Updated]

A 12-year-old Boy Scout shot himself in the head at a summer camp in San Diego today.

San Diego police told NBC San Diego that the boy was still alive as of 7:49 a.m. and taken to a hospital. However, no further information about the boy's condition has been given. He was at Fiesta Island for a Boy Scouts of America camp that lasts from June to August.

Authorities recovered the gun from a tent shortly after, according to Fox 5 San Diego. Investigators are looking into what happened, as there are no gun programs or shooting ranges at the camp.

UPDATE July 1, 11:25 a.m.: Investigators told NBC San Diego that the boy, who's from Las Vegas, may have been fatally shot more than once in the upper torso, and not in the head as earlier reports stated. And though it was reported yesterday that the boy had pulled the trigger himself, officials are not ruling it as a suicide because they are still waiting on the results of an autopsy scheduled for today that will show the trajectory of the bullet.

UPDATE June 30, 10:35 a.m.: San Diego police Officer Matt Tortorella told City News Service that the boy has died.

Eds. Note: An earlier version of this story reported that the boy was 11, but new reports say he was 12 years old. LAist has corrected this in the story.
