Vintage Video: 1973's 'The Happy World of Huell Howser'

California's beloved broadcaster and celebrator of the state's treasures is spotted here showing his roots in this 1973 special called "The Happy World of Huell Howser."

Produced for and aired on WSM-Channel 4 in Nashville, in Howser's home state of Tennessee, this quirky animal-centric show includes a chat with singer Minnie Pearl, Howser singing "Happy Birthday" to a live pig, interviewing a scantily clad man and his bear, Howser feeding that bear right out of his own mouth (his "whoaaaaa!" is priceless), and an interview with a man whose dog rides around town on the roof of his car. It's classic Huell Howser enthusiasm and sincerity, 40 years back.

Howser died last week at the age of 67, and though he did not want any memorials, his own archive of TV work from his varied career is a great testament to the man we all consider "California's Gold."
