Cyclist Dies During Critical Mass Bike Ride

An 18-year-old man died during Los Angeles' Critical Mass bike ride after he lost control and slammed into a wall.

Jerico Culata lost control of his bike as he was riding on a downhill curve near UCLA and slammed into a masonry wall, according to City News Service. The crash happened just before 10 pm near De Nave Drive and Charles E. Young Drive. Culata was transported to UCLA Medical Center where he died a short time later.

Other riders were involved in the crash, but none of them were seriously hurt. It's not clear from news reports whether Culata was wearing a helmet at the time (we happened to pass the ride last night, and noticed many of the riders don't wear helmets).

Critical Mass is a monthly riding event that started in San Francisco in 1992 and now takes place on the last Friday of the month in cities all over the world.
