Get Spirited Away with the films of Hayao Miyazaki at the American Cinematheque! "Castles in the Sky", a 20-year retrospective of the renowned Japanese animator's Studio Ghibli, plays this and next weekend. That Oscar winner screens Friday at the Aero, alongside the gem My Neighbor Totoro Sunday afternoon at 4PM. If you've never seen one of Miyazaki's exquisite, sweetly spiritual works, either would make a fine entry point. If you aren't up for reading, or would like to introduce your family to these films, note that these are English dubbed prints.

For fans who want to dig deeper, Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind screens Saturday at the Egyptian. The pro-environment, post-apocalyptic action film is the very first Studio Ghibli release. The Egyptian also hosts Porco Rosso, a lesser-known WWII adventure in which an ace pilot's selfishness transforms him into a pig (a theme familiar to fans of Spirited Away). Back at the Aero, Sunday night closes with Whisper of the Heart. The coming-of-age story about a girl and her top-hat-laden-cat is the only feature from Miyazaki's protégé Yoshifumi Kondo, who died suddenly & tragically a few years after its release. These films screen from new prints in their native Japanese, with English subtitles.

The Oscar outpouring for The Artist & Hugo illustrates an aficionado's interest in the early days of cinema, but here's a name any moviegoer would recognize: Paramount Pictures is turning 100. LACMA and Film Independent will mark the occasion with screenings throughout the season of Paramount films old and new. The series begins tomorrow by turning over A New Leaf. The writing & directorial debut of Elaine May (writer of The Birdcage, director of the ill-fated Ishtar), A New Leaf stars her as a nebbish heiress in the sights of a vapid playboy (Walter Matthau). Then, classic comedienne Mae West & Cary Grant pair off in the racy 1930s comedy She Done Him Wrong. The film is "pre-Code", an almost-mythical designation meaning it was made just before the Motion Picture Production Code (a more restrictive precursor to the MPAA) really took off. Compared to screwball contemporaries like Bringing Up Baby & Holiday (playing together at the New Bev), it's even screwier & ballier. It's $10 for the double-bill, or just $5 for the wild, wild West.
