Most know Edward James Olmos for his role as Commander Adama on "Battlestar Galactica", but "The Old Man" maintains a dedication to social justice in our universe, too. In 1996, he co-founded the Los Angeles Latino International Film Festival, and this weekend he and LALIFF co-director Marlene Dermer bring Contested Visions in Latin America to LACMA. The two-day series complements the museum's Contested Visions in the Spanish Colonial World exhibition, beginning Saturday with an examination of activist cinema from Peru (The Milk of Sorrow), Mexico (The Violin) and Bolivia (The Gift of The Pachamama). Olmos hosts the program and a roundtable discussion with featured directors and actors. Sunday, the series continues with an afternoon of shorts documenting native culture, history, ritual and struggle. Each screening is free, but reservation tickets are required.

"Battlestar Galactica" continued a tradition of melding social critique with science fiction that includes cult writer Harlan Ellison. Ellison wrote the most popular episodes of the original "Star Trek", "The Alfred Hitchcock Hour" & "The Outer Limits" (which inspired James Cameron's Terminator), among some 1,700 published pieces. He returns to the Cinefamily this Thursday for The Other Glass Teat. Named for a collection of TV critiques originally published in the Los Angeles Free Press, the event features the famously unhinged author recanting his wild career, joined by rare screenings of his iconic episodes. Screenwriter Josh Olson (A History of Violence) moderates, and if you can't make it out, Cinefamily will live-stream the event on their blog.

"If you mention 'Battlestar Galactica' one more time, I'll scream!" OK! Just make sure you save it for The Innkeepers. The haunted hotel story from horror wunderkind Ti West (House of the Devil) opens theatrically next month, and USC's School of Cinematic Arts has a free preview (reservation required) as part of its Outside the Box (Office) series. Every Wednesday & Sunday, bear witness to a tantalizing selection of international & independent films at the campus' Ray Stark Family Theatre.

Should you prefer a vintage creeper, the Cinefamily's Friday Night Frights series features Crawlspace with writer-director David Schmoeller in person. You have problems with your landlord? Cult actor Klaus Kinski (Aguirre: The Wrath of God, Werner Herzog's Nosferatu) stars as a lipstick-laden, ex-Nazi who's outfitted an apartment building with secret passageways and devious devices for peeping & preying upon female residents. Kinski is notoriously nutso off-set as well, and if the title of Schmoeller's documentary short Please Kill Mr. Kinski is any indication, it should make for a lively discussion.
