LAist Film Calendar 12/08-12/11: Edgar Wright's Third Fest & EPFC's Ten Years

Edgar Wright & friend (probably not appearing at the New Beverly this week) on the set of 'Shaun of the Dead' Courtesy Rogue Pictures

In the world of internet film geekery, your seen-list is roughly equivalent to your penis size (the difference being that you actually use your seen-list on a regular basis). For a film geek as revered as Edgar Wright to publicly declare he hasn't seen X is a brave move on his part and a wonderful opportunity on ours, since he's made "Movies Edgar Has Never Seen" the theme of his latest Wright Stuff festival at the New Beverly! We haven't seen many of these either, so let's review.

The cinematic cherry-popping begins Friday with "Rock & Roll All Nite", featuring The Girl Can't Help It (a swingin' sixties musical with Jayne Mansfield) and Get Crazy (an 80s rocker unavailable on DVD). On a separate bill comes Edgar Wright's own Scott Pilgrim vs The World, sure to receive some sneaky surprises courtesy of the festival theme. Saturday brings a triple threat clash of classic comic titans, when "Stone Face" Buster Keaton takes on "Little Tramp" Charlie Chaplin and "Uncle Claude" W.C. Fields for Steamboat Bill, Jr (Keaton), Modern Times (Chaplin) and The Bank Dick (Fields)! Sunday, go "Far Out & Far East" with The 5,000 Fingers of Dr. T (the only film ever written by Dr. Seuss) and Kwaidan (an epic Japanese horror anthology).

Having never seen these films, it will be considerably difficult for Edgar Wright to introduce them. Accompanying each screening is a dynamic duo of guest hosts: Joe Dante & Allan Arkush (Friday), Greg Mottola & Bob Wiede (Saturday) and Patton Oswalt & John Landis (Sunday)! The festival continues for eight crazy nights; weeknight screenings are a nice mix of classics like Bad News Bears and The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance to lesser-known gems like Ride The High Country (a Sam Peckinpah western that served as a thematic blueprint for The Wild Bunch) and Hickey & Boggs (a gritty reunion of Bill Cosby and his "I Spy" co-star Robert Culp written by Walter "The Warriors" Hill).

From finding new favorites to discovering new talent, the Echo Park Film Center turns 10. True to form, they're taking their anniversary show into the community. The Center hosts an all-day open house on Saturday, accompanied by live music & screenings at Stories on Friday night, The Smell on Sunday afternoon and, via their one-and-only Filmmobile, the Vons on Alvarado. It all culminates at the Downtown Independent on Sunday at 6:30 for the premiere of City of Angels 11: An EPFC Youth Film Project. And it's all free (of course, donations make it happen)! Support our future filmmakers!
