LAist Film Calendar 12/01-12/03: Cinefamily's Animation Breakdown!

The Cinefamily draws us in this weekend with a killer cartoon line-up! Their six-day Animation Breakdown kicks off tomorrow with three screenings of Don Hertzfeldt's shorts: two evening shows on the verge of selling out and a newly minted midnight show. The Austin-based animator (and Gaucho graduate) melds old school techniques (each frame is painstakingly constructed on equipment from the 1920s) with new school absurdist humor and cynical slapstick. As a result, his shorts are acclaimed everywhere from Spike & Mike and Adult Swim to Bravo and the Academy. Hertzfeldt appears in the flesh after each program as part of a roadshow premiere for his latest, It's such a beautiful day, the conclusion to his "Bill Trilogy". Catch up with part one, the Sundance Grand Jury winner Everything Will Be OK, courtesy of Hertzfeldt's Bitter Films:

Speaking of Adult Swim, the late night mainstay wouldn't have stepped into the pool without Space Ghost Coast to Coast. Saturday, the Animation Breakdown hosts a 5 o'clock retrospective reuniting the cast & crew (including - fittingly - George Lowe, the voice of Space Ghost, via disconnected transmission). Adult Swim themselves host a retrospective for web animator Brad Neely at 10 that night. Subtitled From Creased Comics to China, IL, Neely himself is coming for a Q&A and karaoke party with the children (but not the British children).

Sunday, jump ship from cels to stop-motion for An Evening With Bruce Bickford. The crazed clay creator quickly caught the attention of Frank Zappa, who highlighted his hallucinogenic work in the concert film Baby Snakes. The night caps off with the world premiere of his psychedelic opus, Cas'l, over 20 years in the making.

For a more even-tempered take on the medium, check in at 5:30 on Sunday for Masters of Polish Animation: The Enchanted World of Children's Animation. Fans of Polish movie posters are familiar with brilliant color schemes & bizarre imagery. Now imagine those talents put to service infusing everyday objects with life for vibrant stories for kids of all ages. Screening in mega-rare 35mm prints as part of a sub-festival-within-the-festival (how's that for a breakdown?) celebrating Polish animation, this may be your only opportunity to experience the magic.

We would be remiss without closing on the biggest name of the Breakdown. Pixar's latest short, La Luna, won't hit the big screen until their next feature, Brave, but you can catch a special preview Saturday at 2PM. Some may have been lucky to see its premiere earlier this year at LA Shorts Fest. Cinefamily goes one better by bringing in the man in the moon, director Enrico Casarosa, for a behind-the-scenes panel discussing his storytelling and influences. La Luna will almost certainly be nominated for Best Animated Short, so you can even call it advance research for your Oscar pool!

Full list appears below. We hear other venues are playing movies that were shot in "real life". Whatever that is.
