LAist Film Calendar 08/18-08/21: Red State & A New Laemmle Locale

By many accounts, writer-director-born-again-stoner Kevin Smith's best work is behind him. With the pending release of Red State, we believe otherwise. The film is a radical departure from his previous work, leaving behind the screwball cynicism of the Askewniverse for a rough-around-the-edges religious thriller inspired by The Westboro Baptist Church & Waco cults. Red State stars Michael Parks (Sheriff Earl McGraw of From Dusk Till Dawn, Kill Bill & Grindhouse) as a malicious preacher, Melissa Leo as his troubled daughter & John Goodman as an agent on the hunt for teens the two have kidnapped.

At this point, Red State is best known for its unique release. Earlier this year, Smith held an auction for the film's distribution rights at Sundance which ended in him selling the rights to himself for $20. The following month, he went on a cross-country roadshow, pairing a screening of the film with a personal appearance akin to his An Evening With Kevin Smith performances. It's in this vein that Smith hosts Red State screenings all week during an Oscar-qualifying run at the New Beverly. The film screens at 6:30 & 9:00 every evening, with a lengthy (and probably very tangential) Q&A to follow. Several shows have already sold out, with remaining tickets on sale for $20.

While it isn't quite a red state, the Antelope Valley is hardly a bastion of art cinema. That changed last week, with the stealth launch of Laemmle BLVD in Lancaster. The local arthouse chain reaches way out with a 3-screen theater which embodies the luxurious lounge style that's all the rage in modern moviegoing. The stadium seating of nearby Cinemark has been ditched in favor of intimate rows of recliners, while a full dinner menu, beer, wine & tea bar will make good use of each seat's push away table. No word on if it's Gold Class pricing for the amenities, but no matter what the cost, this is fabulous news for those who dig A/V in the AV.
