LAist Film Calendar 07/28-07/31: Summer Frights

Nothing screams summer like Sleepaway Camp! It may not be a household name like Friday the 13th (it isn't even being remade!), but that may change Friday the 29th following the Nuart's midnight screening. After losing her family in a boat accident, painfully shy Angela hopes for a normal life away at camp. Unfortunately, kids will be kids and bullies will be bullies. But it gets better - they all die. Could it be Angela's over-protective cousin Ricky, or is Angela hiding something?

Sleepaway Camp is a delightfully sick slasher that wrings every penny out of its low budget. The inventive stalk-and-slash sequences pull no punches, and since the majority of victims (and possibly the killer?) are younger teens, the kills pack an additional wallop. A true cult classic, it inspired Camp Kill Yourself (a skate-punk band whose promotional stunt videos featured then-unknown Bam Margera) & a series of sequels featuring Bruce Springsteen's sister. Actors Felissa Rose (Angela), Jonathan Tiersten (Ricky) & Tom van Dell (Mike, one of the bullies) will introduce the screening.

For a different sort of camp, Doug Benson continues his Movie Interruption series Sunday at the Cinefamily with last year's Piranha remake. Calling the film decent may be a stretch, but there's something to be said for a film that knows from frame one how ridiculous it is. It's a ton of fun, with a cast including Doc Brown, Ving Rhames, Paul Scheer, Elisabeth Shue & Adam Scott. It's unclear whether Cinefamily is presenting the film in its "original" 3D format (nerd alert: it was a post-conversion anyway, which James Cameron publicly insulted). Regardless, the beach, boobs & blood will be benefited by Benson's belittling.

If you're the classier sort, who prefers a charming bed & breakfast to childish camp, may we suggest Psycho II? The New Beverly screens this nearly-forgotten sequel to the Hitchcock classic Saturday in collusion with Horror Movie A Day. HMAD's review praises the film for "present[ing] another mystery angle without betraying or rewriting the original film". Their screening sadly features no guests (how spoiled we are!), but includes several Psycho-themed giveaways.
