We Survived! Carmageddon Is Over! 405 Freeway To Open Today

California Highway Patrol Officers meet about half way up the Sepulveda Pass on the empty Interstate 405 in Los Angeles, Saturday, July 16, 2011. Traffic in the Los Angeles area is so far moving smoothly, several hours after authorities shut down a 10-mile (16-kilometer) stretch of one of the busiest U.S. freeways for a massive 53-hour construction project. The end of the world has ended. Approximately 16 hours ahead of schedule, Carmageddon is over, said the mayor during news conference on Sunday morning.

Said Villaraigosa, "I'm proud of this effort. I'm proud of what the people have been able to do...Without their cooperation, I would not be able to make this announcement...Mission accomplished. We will open up this freeway as soon as possible. It looks like 11:30 a.m. is the time."

Now, be patient, we only have to wait until next summer to do it all again.
