As temperatures climb outside the cinema, it's high time to relax with one of the coolest actors out of the past. For those unfamiliar, Robert Mitchum excelled at icy antiheroes & haunting psychodrama over a 50 year career that included Night of the Hunter, Cape Fear & Jim Jarmusch's Dead Man. UCLA Film & Television Archive's latest series, "Tracking the Cat", highlights Mitchum's early roles & forgotten gems all month long at the Hammer's Billy Wilder Theater.

"Tracking the Cat" opens Friday with Pursued. Director Raoul Walsh is Hollywood royalty in his own right; his 130+ filmography includes Humphrey Bogart in High Sierra & James Cagney in White Heat. Here, he melds the Western & film noir for a dark desert tale of an orphan (Robert Mitchum) still scarred by childhood violence. The print comes from UCLA Film & Television Archive's own restoration, so it'll definitely sparkle. Walsh biographer Mariliyn Ann Moss & noir historian Alan K. Rode will introduce the film. Pursued is joined by Blood on the Moon, another of Mitchum's raw-hide roughies unavailable on U.S. DVD.

Another Western town comes under fire in the religious riot Salvation Boulevard. The black comedy drew accolades after its premiere in this year's Sundance Film Festival, and The Aero hosts a local preview with director George Ratliff & producer Cathy Schulman. Ratliff is no stranger to the humor & horror of the mega-church; ten years ago he documented a Texas church's theatrics in Hell House. Schulman previously produced Worst Best Picture Winner Crash & documentary Darfur Now. While they won't be appearing off-screen, Salvation Boulevard stars Pierce Brosnan as an evangelical leader, Greg Kinnear as his half-baked challenger and Jennifer Connelly, Marisa Tomei & Isabelle Fuhrman as parishioners caught in the middle.

Schulman isn't the only Oscar holder hosting this weekend. Documentarian Errol Morris (The Fog of War, The Thin Blue Line) appears Saturday at the Cinefamily for a preview of his latest, Tabloid. Decades before the era of celebrity sensation for its own sake, the film follows beauty queen Joyce McKinney's quest to "rescue" her lover from a Mormon mission - by kidnapping & seducing him. The screening is free with pre-registration, but you'll still want to arrive early to snag a seat. Don't be scandalous!
