Jay Mariotti Ordered to Stand Trial on Stalking and Assault Charges

Former sports columnist and ESPN loudmouth Jay Mariotti must stand trial in defense of multiple felony charges filed by an ex-girlfriend stemming from an incident in April outside a Venice restaurant, an L.A. Superior Court judge ruled on Tuesday.

Mariotti, who is on probation from a domestic violence incident last year, allegedly yanked out a chunk of the woman's hair and grabbed her cellphone while shouting at her, according to prosecutors.

During the preliminary hearing, Mariotti's attorney Scott Holley contested that the woman was wearing hair extensions. Which, as Deadspin puts it: "is a little like saying that punching your girlfriend in the boob isn't so bad if it's fake."

Mariotti is due in court on July 12. He faces up to five years in prison if convicted on all counts.
