LAist Film Calendar 06/23-06/26: The Los Angeles Film Festival, Week 2

Our coverage of the Los Angeles Film Festival continues! The second & final weekend starts tomorrow night at LA Live with a revival screening of the South Central-set classic Boyz N The Hood. Produced at the height of gangsta rap, the street story starred former N.W.A. member Ice Cube & then-unknowns "Larry" Fishburne (The Matrix), Cuba Gooding Jr. (Jerry Maguire), Angela Bassett (Malcolm X), Regina King (The Boondocks) & Nia Long (Friday).

Other Thursday night screenings include two street romances: Mamitas, shot & set in Echo Park by first-time filmmaker Nicholas Ozeki, and Ticket to Paradise, a Cuban film set amongst homeless punks in the early 1990s. If you're not feeling the love, the Downtown Independent hosts Sawdust City, a tale of two brothers, an estranged father, and a terrible Thanksgiving, as well as a separate program of music videos directed by Eric Wareheim (of Tim & Eric Awesome Show, Great Job!) for the likes of Depeche Mode, MGMT, Ben Folds & Maroon 5. Get out of downtown altogether with Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame at the Ford Ampitheatre. The Hong Kong action-fantasy comes from veteran filmmaker Tsui Hark (Once Upon A Time In China) with a blend of period mystery & mystical ass-kicking.

Friday, LA Film Festival Guest Programmer Daniele Luppi (who composed Danger Mouse's Rome project) hosts a screening of Burt Reynolds' spaghetti western Navajo Joe. Rome is deeply indebted to the work of Ennio Morricone (who scored Navajo Joe, The Good, The Bad & The Ugly and countless other genre classics), and the event offers a rare opportunity to see Luppi open a dialogue with & about his musical influences. For Italian & action film fans, a 35mm screening of Navajo Joe is a treat in its own right; Eccentric Cinema heralds the film as "more entertaining than virtually anything Reynolds has done in the last 30 years".

Saturday, stop monkeying around with Project Nim, a free Community Screening. The new documentary from James Marsh (Man On Wire) recounts the hope, horror & humanity of a social science experiment to raise a chimp as human so he would learn sign language. That evening, How to Cheat screens as the final film in narrative competition. The lo-fi dramedy follows a man's tragicomic quest for the perfect affair after learning his wife is infertile & his life is going south. Local writer-director Amber Sealey stars as the cheatee, and the film was entirely self-funded via donations hustled from family, friends & a Kickstarter project.

Sunday, the festival closes with the world premiere of Don't Be Afraid of the Dark, a 1970s horror remake written & produced by Guillermo del Toro (Pan's Labyrinth) and starring Katie Holmes (Dawson's Creek) & Guy Pearce (Memento). Del Toro fans will delight in an afternoon screening of The Arcane Enchanter, an obscure gothic sorcery film which the director cites as an influence & personal favorite. If you're shut out of both showings, head on out to the Nokia Plaza for Rudy, a free outdoor event. The film is accompanied by a Football Fan Fest featuring NFL players, cheerleaders, DJs, beer garden, grill & games. Sounds like a winner to us!

Try as we might, we couldn't catch everything in this column. Visit the LA Film Fest for the full listing. Non-festival listings appear below.
