As you may have heard, today is National Doughnut Day. No matter how you spell it, today doughnut (or donut) lovers can give props to the glazed, cream-filled, or sprinkle-topped objects of affection. Mmmm, doughnuts!

It seems America's love of doughnuts, at least today, is superseded only by America's love of writing stories online about National Doughnut Day, from all avenues of approach. While many of us can liberally indulge in our doughy fried treat obsession today, let's look at National Doughnut Day, the web obsession.

Over at Squid Ink, things are a little less-than-edible thanks to a fun roundup showcasing their picks for the "Top Five Giant Doughnut Sign Sightings in film, television, and video games." If you're looking for five doughnuts you can actually put in your mouth, check out City’s Best on HuffPo's profile of local food blogger Cathy Chaplin and her 5 fave L.A. donuts.

Taking a more intellectual (wink!) approach, the OC Register ponders: "What do cops think about National Doughnut Day?" Sadly, the answer is: Not much. Most of the cops they spoke to prefer chowing down on fruit or granola before chasing down perps. Can you imagine the Bangles singing about all the cops at the salad bar walking like Egyptians? Hmph.

For the literary doughnut lovers, MediaBistro's Galleycat reviews ten donut-focused books.

Our frugal friends at KTLA offer up where you can go to get a free doughnut today. Well, they have two spots they name, Krispy Kreme and Dunkin' Donuts; there are a few Krispy Kremes left in L.A., but, uh, still no Dunkin' Donuts. So good luck with that one, KTLA readers.

In the spirit of the internet, even the Christian Science Monitor got in the game with their list of the The Top Searched Doughnut Shops in 2011. Making the list and repping Los Angeles are our hometown heroes, Stan's Donuts, and Recession Obsession fodder Randy's Donuts.

We're guilty, too, for sure. Last week we got excited for pastry chef Mariah Swan's doughnut creations being served up tonight at BLD, and yesterday we took a look at how one popular food truck was getting all wrapped up in Doughnut Day and a new play.

Happy National Doughnut Day, L.A.!
