Weekend Movie Guide 04/01: It's A Bird, It's A Rainn, It's 'Super' Man!

Dwight's gone off the deep end! Super stars Rainn Wilson as super-skewer The Crimson Bolt, a 40-something loser who takes to the streets after sleazy drug dealer Kevin Bacon. Armed with a trusty wrench & teen sidekick Ellen Page (who works by day at Studio City's SuperSmash! comics store), The Bolt promises to make it rain a bloody beatdown on criminals everywhere!

Fans of 2004's Dawn of the Dead & 2007's Slither know Super writer/director James Gunn has a knack for melding blood-red horror with white-hot wit & pitch-black comedy. Those who don't can find out for themselves when Gunn joins Doug Benson for a Q&A tonight after the 7:40 screening at Laemmle's Sunset. Tomorrow's 10:15 screening boasts even more Super stars: Michael Rooker, Sean Gunn & Steve Agee!

Korean creature feature Chawz also opens at Laemmle's Sunset. The film pits a group of hunters against an angry boar, resulting in an angrier boar avenging against all humans! But the strangest killer of all can be found at the Nuart. Rubber is the world's first psychic tire slasher movie. No fooling! Written, directed & scored by electronic artist Mr. Oizo, it's certainly got the makings for an engaging midnight movie.

Hop is the exact opposite - a bright-eyed, bushy-tailed Easter romp from Illumination Entertainment. Their first feature, last summer's surprise hit Despicable Me, set the bar pretty high. But Hop's director, Tim Hill, also brought the CGI Alvin & The Chipmunks to life. And both films' trailers also feature prominent poop jokes. It's enough to make you pray kids everywhere go glassy-eyed like the Bieber clone on the Insidious poster.
