Another study means another strong showing for California universities. The London-based Times Higher Education just released their first rankings of universities based on global reputations for research and teaching. The results are based on a survey of 13,388 academics in 131 countries.
45 US universities landed in the Top 100. Caltech represents Los Angeles at #10, with UCLA not far behind at #12. USC, better luck next time - you landed in the #71-80 range.
Addressing why Caltech ranks second in the World University Rankings but only tenth on reputation, Professor Simon Marginson of the University of Melbourne explains that Caltech's "specialist science research profile is tailor-made for the THE (main World University Rankings) and some other rankings," but that it is "not as well known as the more comprehensive Ivy Leaguers."
Here is a snapshot of the rankings:
1. Harvard University
2. Massachusetts Institute of Technology
3. University of Cambridge
4. University of California, Berkeley
5. Stanford University
6. University of Oxford
7. Princeton University
8. University of Tokyo
