LA Design Events: March 2011 Preview

Calling all print, web & motion graphic designers from all corners of the Southland, come out and meet your colleagues, listen to lectures from the masters, participate in talks, see exhibits, and celebrate our fantastic profession. Plan your industry social calendar right here!

Below is a preview of the events I've gathered for the first half of March 2011, but I know there are more out there. If you know of more design happenings, post them in the comments, and in the meantime, we'll do a mid-month follow up to showcase the second half of the month.

A Design Discussion with Michael Doret

Michael is one of the most celebrated practitioners of “integrated letterforms”; his award-winning work blurs the distinctions between the worlds of lettering, illustration, and graphic design. Michael will delve into his past and share with the audience the primal sources for the sensibilities that drive his art, and how he came to do what he does. With graphic examples Michael will discuss how he discovered that his environment and surroundings while growing up made deep and lasting impressions in his young mind that are still blatantly reflected in the samples of work he’ll be showing from various stages in his career.

RIPE: A Wine Show About Art Tasting opening reception

As an art gallery exhibition, RIPE will transform wine barrels, wine bottles and even wine corks into cutting-edge contemporary art created by some of today's most exciting urban and graffiti artists. This exhibit is appropriately paired with wine tastings throughout the month! Participants include Plata Wine in Paso Robles, CA., Washington State based Charles Smith Wines, Sonoma, CA based wine barrel restoration experts ReCoop and Napa, CA based wine cork manufacturer W.A. Silva Corks USA.

Design firm KBDA recently rebranded the permanent exhibition "Age of Mammals" at the Los Angeles County Natural History Museum. Learn more about their process with Allison Bloss and Elizabeth Salud from KBDA as they guide you on a tour. Fly in the Buttermilk: Memoir of an African-American in Advertising, Design and Design Education

Archie Boston will present a personal look at the world of advertising, design and design education from the perspective of a minority insider. He will discuss the obstacles and achievements in his life over the last half century. He will also show highlights from his award-winning creative work throughout his exceptional career. These designs, often dealing with racism and sexual mores, are filled with wit and satire. Archie will also discuss documentaries on 20 outstanding Los Angeles designers that he videotaped in 1986.

Digital Media Artists LA, March Meeting

This month's event is on Video Game Design. Map making and low vs. high polygonal design decisions. A character designer showcases his work for Electronic Arts and explains how it's done. Illustration Designer from Nickelodeon to talk about digital design + wacom tablet use. Our sponsor, Adobe, will be offering a door prize of a premium CS5 bundle to an attendee. DMA/LA meetings are held at the Barnsdall Gallery Theater (BGT) in Hollywood.

riCardo crespo, senior vice president of global creative for Fox Studios, Consumer Products division is sitting down with Jeni Herberger for a live, on-location taping of 'Talk Story with Jeni'—and you’re invited to be a part of the studio audience! riCardo has spent his career striving to fulfill his purpose and recognize his responsibility. He will share his thoughts on working the brand (not the man), learning to find what really drives you and more! Spend the evening confirming and deepening your impressions of a guy who plays for a living! After the show, hang around and talk story with Jeni and riCardo while we sip on wine and nibble on cheeses.

Showcasing two-dimensional, abstracted vignettes of the Los Angeles cityscape as both an exercise in artful placemaking and a response to the powerful imagery of forgotten urban landscapes, Making Place explores the myriad ways Los Angeles has layered itself into a complex network of activity at once dense and urbanistically challenged. Conversations on Making Place will explore the exhibition’s themes while broadly looking at the ways thoughtful placemaking has shaped the city of Los Angeles. The panel features Erin Cullerton, John Frane, Hadrian Predock, Marc Salette, and Florencia Pita and is moderated by KCRW's Frances Anderton.

Los Angeles Creative Mornings with Scott Flora, co-founder of Blik

Blik is the leading designer and maker of innovative self-adhesive, removable surface graphics.
