Go Ahead, Have a Slice: It's National Pie Day!
Sure, the holidays are behind us, and a few of us might even still be on track with our "eat healthier" resolutions, but everyone deserves a break, and today is as good an excuse as any: It's National Pie Day.
No, it's not Pi Day. It's merely a day to eat pie. Why? If you need a reason, well...come on—get into the spirit of things. Observing National Pie Day is simple: Eat some pie. There are a few celebrations in which you can partake, too.
It's a perfect day to pair pie with beer, and to that end, local artisanal pie-makers I Heart Pies will be reprising their Pie Pop Up at Eagle Rock Brewery from Noon to 6 p.m. today. They'll have both sweet and savory samples paired with Eagle Rock's brew- some new seasonal pies on the menu include a Meyer Lemon Meringue, Pear with clover honey crumb and the favorite Persimmon Gingersnap. We'll also have sausage hand pies and some other surprises.
For a little taste of pie, we've enjoyed the individually portioned "Cutie Pies" at simplethings (time your visit to include sitting down to brunch or lunch). And for the more big chain comfort pie classic, there's always Marie Callender's (it's Lemon Meringue month). Head to Pasadena for a slice of Pie n' Burger's legendary blueberry pie...go a la mode, considering our unseasonably warm temps, or get a slice of "old school pie" at Phillipe's. Of course, you can always opt to make your own at home; why not get in some practice for the next KCRW Pie Contest?
Whatever you do, just stop saying that pies are the next cupcakes. Enough already. Now go eat some pie.
