There are a lot of delicious dishes on the menu at the Black Cat Bakery and Café, but none so far have proven as memorable or tantalizing as their Bibimbap-style Farro, a hearty, healthy, beautiful breakfast item that is an absolute must-try. Black Cat opened recently in the vacated Mani's spot on Fairfax, and offers patrons a bright, cheery spot to linger over a hot cup of coffee, a variety of pastries from Homeboy bakery, and breakfast and lunch dishes.

The Bibimbap-style Farro is a savory alternative to more traditional egg dishes, and a spin on the Korean "mixed meal" dish of rice, veggies, and a raw egg, with its warm, hearty, nutty farro topped with seasonal sauteed greens like asparagus and red chard (leaves and stems), two dollops of creamy buratta, sweet sundried tomatoes, and a shimmering perfectly fried egg (an alternative is to order the egg poached as a slightly gentler variation on the prime protein). The dish is filling and complex, and a definite switch-up to a more typical morning meal of eggs and potatoes.
