Celeb Chefs Get Truckin' in Marvel Vs. Capcom Food Fight

On Saturday, Capcom treated their fans to a food and game playing event to celebrate a collaboration 10 years in the making—the release of Marvel vs. Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds. Pitting Marvel versus Capcom, the event was a fun collision between the very distinct realms of game geeks and celebri-chefs, with the battle played out on the palate in a food truck battle between the two rival forces.

Some die-hard gaming enthusiasts had spent the night outside the Downtown venue in the hopes of being among the first to come in and play the game, and also to queue up to get a sample from each of the two specially-wrapped food trucks to help name a victor. Representing Marvel, in red, was Chef Ludovic Lefebvre (LudoBites) on his Ludo Truck, versus Chef Eric Greenspan (The Foundry on Melrose) in blue, on board the Mandoline Grill truck wrapped to rep Capcom. Each chef prepared a custom bite inspired by a game character, and for the fans who could tear themselves away from the gaming consoles and the tables of food by Gram & Papas, the task of picking a winning dish was possibly as epic as the game itself.

Leaving the gaming to the gamers inside the cramped and energized lounge area, I focused on the food fight, which was taking place outside where the two trucks were parked nose to tail. For his dish representing the Incredible Hulk, Lefebvre concocted a thick, juicy burger stuffed with Velveeta (Minnesota "Jucy Lucy" style) on a spinach infused bun (think green!) paired with impossibly thin fries you could dip in "radioactive" green ketchup. Definitely a satisfying, hearty, and--dare I say?--manly dish, the Hulk burger packed a might pow to the tastebuds, and, down the line, the arteries.

On the other side, with a generous and joking side of shouted smack talk peppering the smoke-laced air (hey, thanks, smokers!) Greenspan was serving up his Capcom creation, the Ryu Fireball. He stuffed a grilled bao bun with tender, pink ahi tuna, pork cracklings, cabbage and a spicy mayo that did, indeed, go off like a fiery rocket in the mouth. It was a more delicate touch than his rival's Hulk-ing burger, and an exciting blend of textures and flavors.

All good showdowns end up with a winner, and this was no exception. Though each of the dishes were as different as the characters they represented, the fans had their say, and cast their votes in favor of Lefebvre's burger and fries. Will LudoBites 7.0 have an all comic book hero theme? Or at least feature the Hulk burger? We'll have to wait and see. In the meant time, Marvel beats Capcom...at least in this food truck food fight. Who comes out on top when you're playing the game, well, that's up to you and your skills.
