The LAPD is once again sending a message to drivers across the city to not drink and drive. There will be at least one DUI checkpoint tonight, located in the San Fernando Valley on the border of North Hills and Van Nuys along Roscoe Blvd. between Woodley and Haskell. The LAPD does not have to announce all checkpoints, so there could be more out there.

Traffic deaths statewide have declined by 23 percent between 2007 and 2009, from 3,995 to 3,081 fatalities, according to the LAPD. Driving under the influence-related deaths have declined by 16%, but continue to make up 31% of total traffic deaths.

“Everyone in California should be heartened with these figures,” said Christopher J. Murphy, Director of the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS). “But as encouraging as this is, we can’t let up on the efforts to encourage and support traffic safety. You can help make your community safe; if you see a Drunk Driver - Call 9-1-1.”
