Alhambra Gets a Local News Website

AOL's network of Patch neighborhood news websites have been popping up over the past year in places like the South Bay, Chatsworth and Venice. Beyond the corporate take on hyperlocal news, there are smaller businesses like blogdowntown and other neighborhood newspapers. Enter Alhambra Source. The new community news website will serve the underserved Alhambra, an diverse city of 93,000 people that hardly sees local news coverage. It can be read in English, Chinese and Spanish.

“When communities have low levels of news coverage, they also tend to have low levels of civic engagement and that is something that was found in this area," Managing Editor Daniela Gerson told KPCC.

The project is funded by USC and is a collaboration between students, researchers, web developers and professional journalists.
