Let's Do Lunch: The Hunger Market Cafe
There are some great lunches to be had in this town, and we want to celebrate the midday meal. So, let's do lunch, shall we?
We don't always have the luxury of a leisurely lunch, which means we're looking for something fast, or something to go. But how do you keep from hitting up those ubiquitous "fast food" places? West Hollywood's Hunger Market Cafe offers a full deli case of salads, entree-sized proteins, desserts, and a market selection of goodies to take home or grab to go.
For $8 you can pair a select protein (a bit extra for some of the meat and seafood selections) like a pair of BBQ ribs or a spice-rubbed chicken breast with two side salads. They have a number of hot and cold sides to choose from--it could take you twice as long to decide as it does for you plate to be assembled and handed over!
From quinoa salad to mac and cheese, you can get your good grains in or indulge a little. Their veggies come in tempting flavor combinations, but don't always work, alas--the broccoli salad's dressing a bit too sugary, and the roasted brussel sprouts were served whole and too hard for the fork, and, unfortunately, the teeth. The snap peas were the most successful green at our table.
Though they'll put a plate together for you here, and you can grab a seat and tap away on your laptop with the free wireless internet, you might want to grab your meal to go, so you can take charge of your own heating up and plating.
Save room for dessert, though! They've got cups and containers of Carmela ice cream in their freezer, and a case stocked with brownies and bars, including some from Sweet Square [LAist story]. Peruse the drink section too, and see if you can find an iced tea or soda you don't see every day. That's how we ended up sipping on a Maple soda (yup, sweet like a donut's glaze) and getting our sugar fix without picking out a pastry.
