Weekend Movie Guide: Will Predators Be Despicable?
While it will never return to the dizzyingly absurd heights reached by the Schwarzenegger original, Predators looks like good, dumb fun. The casting of Adrien Brody and Topher Grace gives me additional hope that, while the story may be no more than a knock-off of "The Most Dangerous Game", at least the acting will be good. Critics, so far, seem to agree. Equally well-praised this week is Despicable Me. How incredible is it to watch the career arc of Steve Carell? From bit player on The Daily Show to genuine movie star.
If early notices are any indication, The Kids Are All Right is going to be a contender come Oscar time. It's good to see Mark Ruffalo doing what he does best (e.g. NOT Shutter Island). Mia Wasikowska is, of course, one to watch. The big question this week — will the Grease Sing-A-Long capture the Glee/High School Musical crowd? The bigger question this week — will their teenage eyes explode when they see how skinny John Travolta used to be? Weird to see a young and healthy Jeff Conaway after his experience on Celebrity Rehab.
