Sloan @ House of Blues 07/01/10

Oh, Canada! In honor of Canada Day, Canadians Abroad put on a party at House of Blues Sunset Strip for those well-mannered folks from the Great White North. Canadian comedians warmed up the red-and-white clad crowd early on, but from the "SLOOOOOO-OOOOAAAAN!" chants that filled the venue it was clear that the Sloan boys were the real draw. (If you're not familiar with the band, think Pavement and early Spoon; underrated but killing it since the early 90s, these guys have the whole rock thing down - check out personal favorites The Other Man and Don't Believe a Word as good entry points.)

Laughing with the crowd and kindly refusing requests, Sloan traded vocal slots to play a few songs from each member, eliciting roars from the fans with each starting chord. And, as if to really solidify the friendly stereotype, members dropped into the crowd to talk and hang out immediately post-encore. It almost made an American want to learn the entire Canadian National Anthem for next year.
