LAist Film Calendar: Queer Docs, Fred Willard Talks & Charlie Chaplin Rocks

This week, the real world marks the closing arguments in the court case against Prop. 8. Fittingly, the reel world responds with the premiere of documentary 8: The Mormon Proposition, at Laemmle's Sunset. Produced by former Mormons, and narrated by Milk scribe Dustin Lance Black, the film follows the money and the movement that pushed the legislation into being. To put the struggle in a historical perspective, the Nuart features Stonewall Uprising. The doc is the first to share the stories of Stonewall rioters, and in this spirit, the Nuart hosts Stonewall participant John O'Brien at Friday's evening show. We've come a long way, but there's still quite a ways to go.

If you'd rather not feel alienated and frustrated, share fonder marriage memories with Fred Willard at Cinefamily's 2nd Annual Comedy Festival. While his turn as a gay groom on "Roseanne" is probably too mainstream to make it into the evening's Mondo Willard mix, he'd probably answer questions if you asked. He seems like a nice enough guy. Speaking of nice enough guys, it's Father's Day! Pretend you're someone's proud papa Saturday at the Egyptian, where their Tripleplay matinee showcases student works from Cleveland, Hollywood and John F. Kennedy High Schools. Sunday, go from new school all the way back to Charlie Chaplin's silent classic The Kid. The Cinefamily offers a half-price ticket for kids, while the Aero's presentation plays as part of their Chaplin retrospective, Cine Lights. The series sports brand-spankin'-new 35mm prints of tragicomic masterpieces Gold Rush, City Lights, and shorts that haven't seen projection in decades.

Full list appears below. See you at the movies!
