Vegan Cooking Classes with Spork Foods Moves to Weho, Expands Online
It's just one part of the ever-growing vegan culture in Los Angeles, but a big one. Once a small operation in a Silver Lake apartment, the sisters behind Spork Foods are expanding their business by changing locations to a bigger space in West Hollywood and with plans to put classes and features online.
For a few years now, Heather and Jenny Goldberg have been offering $65, three and a half hour themed vegan cooking classes — BBQ, chocolate, Indian, Southern, etc — where students observe, learn, ask questions about making food before being treated to a meal. The mission: demonstrate that vegan food can be fun, doable, and delicious all while being nutrient dense. Tonight, the sisters are hosting their official (and private) opening their new West Hollywood location.
"We've been wanting to expand our business from the beginning and we grew out of our old space," explained Heather. "Right now we can accommodate up to 12 students, unlike before, when it was eight and cramped."
The new space is a live/work loft off Santa Monica Boulevard and in addition to cooking classes, the Goldbergs are hosting film screenings, yoga and other activities. "We wanted to shake it up a little," Heather said.
Beyond their physical space, the two are launching a website where anyone, whether you're in Los Angeles or not, can learn more about vegan cooking. The idea was partly spawned by zealous students who would travel quite a distance for a class. Once someone made a trip from Seattle based around Spork. Another made a class part of their trip from Japan. The website is expected to launch soon, but in the meantime, you can see one kind of video they did with the magazine VegNews.
