Box Office Review: Ironman 2 Blasts Competition!

There was never any doubt that Ironman 2 would dominate the box office this weekend. The only question was whether it would top The Dark Knight for the largest opening ever. Nope! Despite the largest theater booking in history, Ironman 2 only (only?) managed to bring in $133.6M. That tally squashed the awful A Nightmare on Elm Street ($9.1M | $48.5M) and the resilient How To Train Your Dragon ($6.7M | $201M). The sturdy Date Night continued to print money ($5.3M | $80.8M) as did the nauseating The Back-up Plan ($4.3M | $29.4M).

Furry Vengeance didn't drop as precipitously (and deservedly) as expected ($4M | $11.6M) while Clash of the Titans ($2.3M | $157.8M) and Death at a Funeral ($2.1M | $38.3M) continued to hang around for some inexplicable reason. The Losers ($1.8M | $21.4M) and delightful newcomer Babies ($1.5M) rounded out the top ten without distinction. In limited release, the depressing Mother and Child enjoyed a solid debut ($11,100 per theater). The same can't be said for Multiple Sarcasms which was a disaster ($1187 per).
