LAist Film Calendar: Iron Men, French Spies & Screwy Kid's Movies

This week, we welcome a new addition, as expensive as it is adorable. No, not Babies - the Arclight Pasadena! The plucky youngster opens its doors just in time to join siblings Arclight Hollywood and Arclight Sherman Oaks in a one-off screening of Iron Man on Thursday, followed by Iron Man 2 at midnight. If the thick-armored American superhero is unfitting for this column, thick-headed French agent OSS 117 is made to order. The subtitled spy spoof returns to the Nuart this week with Lost in Rio, a sequel to the criminally underrated Nest of Spies. It doesn't get any more criminal than Casino Jack and the United States of Money, a documentary of corrupt lobbyists, Native American casinos, the mob, bribery, national politics, and international revolution. If that makes you sick (non-objective interjection: it should!), learn how to buck the system with The Money Fix, screening at Echo Park Film Center following a potluck and time banking workshop.

For simpler times, retreat to childhood with The Last Starfighter, courtesy of UCLA Film & Television Archives, or Popeye & Betty Boop cartoons at the Aero. It may be your only chance to see the latter in 35mm, rather than VHS EP mode. There's also Cinefamily's month-long collection of psychedelic kiddie-flicks, kicking off with the colorful cartoon Hugo the Hippo (presented by Yo Gabba Gabba's animation director Kevin Sukho Lee) and lunatic live-action Cassandra Cat (on loan for the first-and-only-time from Czech film archives). If your childhood was anything like mine, you may also find solace in their screening of Carnival Magic, the screwiest film ever rated PG, boasting talking chimps, abusive carnies, handjobs and vivisection! Or, skip ahead a few years into warped adolescence with Human Centipede. OMG SPOILERZ~! If you think the "ass to ass" ending of Requiem for a Dream is revolting, you ain't seen nothing yet!

Full list appears below. See you at the movies!
