Cookies Without Borders: Bake Sale Raised Over $5k for Haiti
Yesterday afternoon the good people behind No Cookie Left Behind held a bake sale to raise funds for Doctors Without Borders and their work in the relief and recovery of Haiti following last month's devastating quake.
Soliciting donated homemade baked goods and other treats from food bloggers, recreational bakers and professionals, the sale boasted fully loaded tables of affordable and delectable items on the sidewalk in front of Scoops. NCLB's Tannaz Sassooni estimates that over 50 bakers took part, offering up over 120 kinds of items for sale. "People heeded the call to bake in a way I would never have imagined," says Sassooni. "I feel like people were just really eager to find a way to do something to help out after this horrible catastrophe," adding that she believes "the fact that we here in LA are earthquake people had a lot to do with it, too."
We earthquake people like to eat, too, and the turnout of the event proved so. Drawing a steady crowd, the bake sale had people perusing and picking out sweets from 2 until 6 p.m., with individuals spending anywhere from a couple of bucks on up to $100. "Lots of people were buying a few things, handing us a twenty, and telling us to keep the change," remarked Sassooni. "There were a couple 100-dollar bills in the the box at the end -- not sure what the story is with those (but we'll take them!)." To add to the till, Scoops' Tai Kim wrote a donation check, and ultimately this morning's tally has the bake sale's take as $5307.25 raised for Doctors Without Borders.
We stopped by early on in the sale, and brought home a box full of baked treats, including a jar of Tangerine Marmalade. It was wonderful to be out on such a beautiful, sunny SoCal winter day getting together with members of the LA community at-large and to take part in something small that was actually something rather big. While you may have missed out on yesterday's sale, you can still donate directly to Doctors Without Borders, organize a sale of your own, or keep your eyes and ears open for future opportunities to eat some sweets for a good cause.
