New Greek Food Truck Brings Gyros, Honey Feta Fries & More to the Streets
The ever-so fast expanding world of L.A.'s new food truck culture grew last night with the addition of Louks to Go, a Greek based truck serving up gyros, salads, fries and Greek donuts known as Loukoumades. A tasting last night proved this truck as a serious contender for streetside lines.
"We want to put many trucks on the road, as many as possible, as fast as possible, once we get this one down," explained owner Aki Vourakis last night in the parking lot of Tina's Trees, a Christmas tree lot in Sherman Oaks. "Once we get this one down to the 'T,' I mean 110%, then we're going to start rolling out more trucks."
Vourakis says the menu will be expanding, but for now, a handful of affordable and quality foods take the line-up. Most unique are the addicting (and messy) honey feta fries ($3), a perfect topping to balance out feta's tanginess. The beef and chicken gyros ($5) are solid, with its juicy tender meats wrapped in a pita, reminiscent of Indian fry bread because it's grilled with olive oil. Vegetarians can request a veggie version full of vegetables—not faux meat—and everyone is encouraged to ask for fries inside the pocket sandwich. They also offers three meal-sized salads: Tomato Salad ($4), Chicken ($5) and Watermelon ($5).
To top off the meal, an order of Louks ($4) is a must have. Short for Loukoumades, these Greek donuts are delicately crispy on the outside and sweetly doughy on the inside. Get them topped with either honey, Nutella or powdered sugar.
Unlike some other trucks with chefs trained in the kitchens of high powered restaurants, Vourakis, who owns a stone fabrication business in Anaheim and is a first generation Greek-American, is coming at this from a more family and friends angle. "All my friends are in the food business, except my cousin and I. So we said, 'let's give it a shot.'" If the food is any indicator, the shot is a success.
Living in Orange County means the truck will most often be found there. However, Louks to Go will be parked at Tina's Trees in Sherman Oaks every night through December 20th. You can follow them on Twitter at @LouksToGo.
