Churro? Xooro: Sure-Oh!
Think a churro is just something you buy off a cart at a festival or theme park? The folks at Xooro invite you to think again. With one store open in Santa Monica, and a second area location poised to open in Hollywood next week, Xooro offers an impressive selection of "Spanish Fritters" in cylindrical form in many enticing flavor combinations.
We gave a couple of their offerings a shot recently, as on a brisk June night after some drinks at Copa d'Oro down the block, who can resist a hot, sugary baked treat?
With menu selections ranging from the traditional to the quirky, we opted to try to satisfy a persistent craving for Tiramisu and the never-ending quest for bacon incorporated into pastries, this time in the form of their Maple Bacon.
The Tiramisu was tasty, but lacked the distinct creamy tang of mascarpone and instead seemed all about the mocha flavoring of the frosting standing in for the espresso-soaked ladyfingers dusted with cocoa powder. The Maple Bacon was actually the better of the two in terms of flavor; the maple was just the right balance of sweet to the bacon's savory. The downside was that, unlike the Nickel Diner's now-legendary Bacon Donut, the bacon was more like "bacon shavings" and wasn't as satisfying as more substantial fresh, thick bacony bits are.
The fritters themselves have a nice, hot snap and have lots of narrow ridges in which to catch whatever flavor coating you go for. The filling is hit or miss--on either end you get mostly fritter, and if you wait to long to make your way from end to end most of the middle will get soaked into the fritter itself or seep out the bottom.
