Drive (a hybrid) they said . . .

It happened over the weekend. Crusing into our local Mobile station at Laurel Canyon and Riverside to fill up the not so fuel efficient SUV that is currently our mode of transport, we were met with a very disturbing site. As we gazed up at the white and blue sign it hit us "Gas is almost three bucks a gallon!"

This was our first time filling up after being out of town for about a week. "This is crazy" we thought to ourselves. Maybe its time to pull the trigger on that Toyota Prius we were thinking about.

As if the ridiculous gas prices of late were not enough to push us into hybrid territory, now we have an even better reason, carpool lane access! Yes, that's right. As of this week, if you own one of the three approved hybrid vehicles: a Honda Civic, Honda Insight or Toyota Prius you can apply for an $8 sticker which gives you CPLA (car pool lane access).

What does this mean? It means, you can drive in the carpool lane even if you are the only person in the car! It does not apply to any other hybrid vehicles currently available or to any of the models set to be released over the next few years so keep that in mind when hybrid shopping.

But, for those who have one of the approved vehicles or are considering one, its just another bit of incentive to help make the transition to a hybrid. Plus, anything that can save a few bucks and help you get out of traffic on the 405 is all good to us.
