Suburban Zombies

Life is really, really boring in the bubble that is the Santa Clarita Valley. Thankfully, running amock can fill the lack of things-to-do void. A large group of zombies attacked Valencia neighborhood businesses last night prompting an LAist reader who was shopping at Target to ask us what the heck was going on. "I did not appreciate looking at iPod headphones when some child running down the isle screamed 'THE ZOMBIES ARE HERE RUNN FOR YOUR LIFEEEEE.' Then there were forty 15-year-olds running at me," she wrote, explaining that the iPod gift card rack was knocked over and that apparently one zombie was hit by the car in the parking lot of Whole Foods (nutty video here of hundreds attacking Target and this one, too). Over 500 people confirmed attending Zombie Invasion SCV on Facebook and the valley's local radio station reported "several hundred" zombies seen around town.

Review: Dead Snow

There are plenty of movies out there that pay homage to their forefather films, those exceptionally well made pieces that stand the test of time and help to define a genre. However, this is perhaps seen nowhere more than in horror film vein, where hat-tips to the Evil Deads, the Braindeads, and even the Shaun of the Deads are practically mandatory. But these exist for a very specific reason: those movies kick ass.

D3 Publisher is an L.A.-based video game company that just seems to know what’s up. By refusing to pigeonhole themselves into any particular genre, the developers have projects that range anywhere from cartoon franchise spin offs to sexy heroine hack n’ slashers, all of which cater to any and all gamers alike. By now, everyone's sick of hearing about how the economy's in the toilet. But hey, sometimes it nets you cheap dinner and a free movie. If you're unemployed, that is. Then you'll want to be heading over to the old Aero, for the uncanny Boris Karloff's spookiest performances, the highly flappable combination of Laurel & Hardy & Fields, and more Ginger than a Shirley Temple - all on their dime (simply present your ID & EDD). For more current freebies, you could always set aside some time to learn something - how about the plight of women in Iran at The Hammer? Or the plight of our descendants stalked by cannibalistic humanoids at The Skirball? Suddenly the recession's a tad easier to bear.

This weekend it's all about BBC America's programming with new seasons of "Robin Hood", "The Graham Norton Show", and "Wire In The Blood". I've seen previews of "Robin Hood" and it's a more than worthy replacement for "Torchwood" whose season (dramatically) ended last Saturday with the (supposed) deaths of at least two main characters. Of course, you'll have to be able to emotionally handle the incredible switch from science fiction to fantasy in order to enjoy "Robin Hood" but just give it a try. [Don't forget the finale of "Tracey Ullman's State of the Union" on Sunday @ 10:00pm on Showtime].

Did anyone see the plastic surgery disaster that is Renee Zellweger on Letterman last night? The skin was stretched so hard over her face I thought her skull was going to pop out. OK so maybe it isn't plastic surgery, Botox anyone? What is wrong with her?? Tracey Ullman has her dead on in "State of the Union".

We have a few pairs of tickets to a rare theatrical screening of the extended director’s cut of Robert Rodriguez’s Planet Terror at Screamfest 07 this Monday at Mann's Chinese. In many people's minds Planet Terror was the better of the two Grindhouse films that came through town as a double-feature. Not even Quentin could compete with the zombies vs the hot one-legged babe w/ machine gun attachment. That babe, by the way, one...

Okay, so for October, let me share with you my scariest movie experience, which was the original Dawn of the Dead. ...Good God this movie scared the hell out of me. For some reason my parents decided it was okay to rent this and watch it all together as a family when I was in fifth grade. I am still confused about why this happened, but okay, whatever. There's a good plot summary here, but...

The Universal lot is teeming with the Undead. I should know, I saw two innocent people attacked and eaten at a press junket. A press junket, people!! We had been invited to witness "Zombie Zchool", a training course where students learn how to walk, talk and twitch like a real, honest to goodness Zombies. The class was being held in front of the old Bates Motel, which, while still an ominous place, is slightly...
