Believe it or not, cupcakes remain a beloved food trend that seems to keep steadily growing as more cupcake-centric bakeries keep opening up around town. Whether you're on the cupcake bandwagon or not, at this time of year many of us make plenty of room for sweet treats as we gather with friends, family, and co-workers to celebrate the season. But it's not just Hanukkah or Christmas we're celebrating: Tuesday December 15th is National Cupcake Day*!
Tuesday is National Cupcake Day. So Who Has the Best?
Auntie Em's Tops List for Best Cupcake Shop, Sprinkles Left Out
ABC7 and Citysearch got together and made a top 7 cupcake shop list. Auntie Em's Kitchen in Eagle Rock took the top spot with Yummy Cupcakes in Burbank and Famous Cupcakes in Valley Village in spots 2 and 3. The list is rounded out by Susie Cakes, The Cobbler Lady, Violet's Cakes, French's Cupcake Bakery, Cupcakery and Dolcissimo. Who didn't make the list? Sprinkles and Crumbs. Oh, snap!
The Return of the Guinness Cupcake
No one really likes green beer or Shamrock Shakes. And corned beef and cabbage is iffy at best.
The Cupcake Challenge Winners!
Last Sunday Drink:Eat:Play hosted a Cupcake Challenge at the Montmartre Lounge. The event was sponsored by Fiji Water, K&L Wine Merchants and CozmoDeck. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric Aids Foundation. Our own Lindsay William-Ross and Caroline-on-Crack were on the official judging panel, along with Sophie Gayot (who we all just watched frighten the finalists on Hell's Kitchen this week), Tara de Lis from Citysearch, Sam Rubin from KTLA, and five others. Guests were also given ballots to vote in three categories. Now without further ado, the winners (full list below gallery). Drumroll please...
Yummy Cupcakes - We Got the Goods
After discussing the various available Easter cupcakes yesterday, we just had to check them out for ourselves at Yummy Bakery.
Easter Cupcakes! Who Needs Chocolate Eggs?
Yummy Cupcakes in Burbank is serving up Easter specialties this week - Carrot Cream Cheese, Easter Bunny, Easter Basket, and the somewhat unusual Egg Hunt. This LAist favorite bakes up an irresistible "Old School" cupcake, a riff on Hostess Cupcakes. The "Old School" will be featuring a pastel palette of curliques this week. (Open 10am to 3pm Easter Sunday)
Sweets for Santa Monica
Santa Monica seems to be the epicenter of cupcakes these days, now that there are not one just one (Yummy Cupcakes one block closer to the Promenade) but two cupcake places there -- four on the Westside, if you count Susie Cakes in Brentwood and Butter Cake Bakery on Pico. Vanilla Bake Shop is dessert caterers Amy and Jeremy Berman's first bakery, and it's very charming. A lot of people in this town are...
Dessert Decadence Rehash & Photo Essay
Last Sunday night, whilst many Angelenos were trying to make complete sentences out of what was left between all the bleeps heard during the MTV Movie Awards, I was down by the beach at the Loews Hotel in Santa Monica, checking out an event called "Dessert Decadence." Billed as a sunset poolside minglefest, the event featured neither a sunset (too overcast and ran from 5-8, just a bit too early) nor a poolside (we...
Move Over Uncle Eddies, There's a New Vegan Chocolate Chip Cookie in Town (and cupcakes)
Time and time again, the small little boutique bakery on Ventura Blvd. in Sherman Oaks keeps on building its reputation. First, Leda's Bake Shop comes on to the scene with its whimsical cupcakes and baked goods, put together in their clean-cut 1960s open style kitchen. Then last fall, to appeal to soccer moms with lactose intolerant sweet teething children and vegans, they added vegan cupcakes. Then came vegan chocolate chip, oatmeal cherry and snickerdoodle...
Yummy, Yummy, Yummy Cupcakes!
Is is "so last year" of us to really love cupcakes? We think not, considering so many of us rang in the new year humming SNL's "Lazy Sunday" hommage to New York's finest--cupcake that is. Now, we've been in that frantic line at Magnolia, and wrestled and wrangled our way to a box of those little gems, and that's a pretty high standard for the West Coast cupcakeries to compete with. LAist started to go cukoo for cupcakes back in March, when we tried out Leda's Bake Shop, and since then cupcakes have boomed in our fair city, though for many, Leda's is our local gold standard. For us, lodged up yonder on the east end of the Valley, local equals Burbank, and recently a cupcakery called Yummy Cupcakes opened its doors on, of all streets, Magnolia. They say they have "New York-style" cupcakes. We say, bring 'em on
