Yo La Tengo is the band that keeps on giving. Since forming in the early 80s, Ira Kaplan (guitars, piano, vocals), Georgia Hubley (drums, piano, vocals), and James McNew (bass, vocals) have done pretty much everything a band can do and then some: Record amazing music (I suggest Electr-O-Pura, I Can Hear the Heart Beating as One, and And Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside-Out as introduction), cover amazing music (Fakebook, Yo La Tengo Is Murdering the Classics), compose amazing music for movies (The Sounds of the Sounds of Science, Junebug, Game 6, Shortbus, Old Joy), create amazing side projects (Dump, Condo Fucks), and, of course, perform...amazingly.

Matador Records Lost Weekend Tickets On Sale Tomorrow
Matador Records has announced that tickets for its’ 21st anniversary celebration in Las Vegas will go on sale tomorrow morning at 9am PST via ticketfly.com. As previously mentioned on LAist, the three day “Lost Weekend” music fest, will take place over October 1-3 at the Pearl Theater inside the Palms Casino. Given the ridiculous lineup and the fact that the Pearl has a capacity of 2,100, getting tickets might be akin to a crapshoot. But hey, a little gambling alongside our indie rock is part of what makes this such an appealing gig in the first place.
Coachella: Day Three 04/18/10
The 2010 Coachella Music and Arts Festival capped off to a rather anticlimactic ending on Sunday night, with the standout performance of Atoms For Peace ending well before the rest of the festival did.
Surfer Blood @ the Echoplex 03/27/10
It seems like everyone we speak to has a hankering for the baby-faced band that is Surfer Blood. We loved them at The Village Voice party at SXSW and decided to check them out locally for the Aquarium Drunkard presented-Waved Out last Saturday. Of course, any band claiming Pavement and Yo La Tengo as influences is on the right path, but it's a really good thing Surfer Blood have got the musical chops to back up their indie rock know-how. And it doesn't hurt that they are, to cite a fan and local LA band manager who I ran into that night, "so adorable I want to put them in my pocket and manage them forever". Definitely.
Starfucker's Top Ten of 2008
December is list-making season. And for us music journalists, it is a time to look back on scores of albums, reflect upon the music and recapitulate our favorites. But this year, just like the last, we took this opportunity to flip that tradition upside down, asking the artists that influenced us what influenced them. The prompt was not limited to albums that came out in 2008.

Let's Go Sailing Record Release Party
Back in town after a nationwide tour, Let's Go Sailing (LGS) of Los Angeles performed at the Troubadour last Thursday to celebrate the debut LP, "The Chaos in Order." Singer/songwriter Shana Levy delivers a slate of multi-faceted music, some say it's a kind of bittersweet dream pop comparable to Yo La Tengo or Belle and Sebastian. It's been a busy 2007 for LGS, and with four songs featured on recent episodes of Grey's Anatomy, an...

Amoeba's Top 25: 10/4- 10/10: Beck, Dylan, Decemberists
Even though Beck is #1 this week, due in part to his headlining the LA Weekly Detour Festival, we present to you the video of Bob Dylan's 'When The Deal Goes Down', not just because it stars our girl Scarlett Johansson, but because Bob has somehow stayed in the Amoeba Top 25 ever since he debuted there early last month. Who says the kids don't have any taste? 1. Beck - Information 2. Killers...
Amoeba's Top 25: 9/26 - 10/3: Scissor Sisters, TV, Yo La
Babydaddy, Jake Shears, Ana Matronic and the rest of the Abba-esque Brit dance group Scissor Sisters are finding just as much success here in the states as they did early last month in the UK where they debuted at #1. The follow-up to 2004's eponymous freshman offerring did extremely well here in LA last week due to several factors: they headlined a sold-out show at the Shrine last Thursday, they appeared on Indie on...
Don't Call it a Comeback
Yo La Tengo I Am Not Afraid of You and I Will Beat Your Ass Matador (2006) After digesting Yo La Tengo's last two records, the sublime "And Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside-Out" (2000) and the somewhat sedate "Summer Sun" (2003), I thought perhaps they had entered their twilight years as a band. After 20 years of recording, touring and slowly but surely becoming indie rock icons the band, composed of guitarist Ira Kaplan,...
