TV Junkie: Please Let That Be the Last AMAs; Yo Gabba Gabba/Louis CK/Brian Regan Will Be Here Soon

TV Junkie: Fallon is Tops; Dora Turns 10

TV Junkie: Fallon is Tops; Dora Turns 10

Yesterday Nickelodeon's "Dora the Explorer" celebrated its 10th anniversary. The groundbreaking series was the first animated Latina character on TV in a leading role. Today, she is seen by over 100 million kids around the world. The show airs in over 150 countries, and it is translated in over 30 languages. What was also remarkable about Dora is that she was neither a cutesy Strawberry Shortcake or sexed-up She-Ra female character - she's just intelligent, confident, and independent. Our two kids were brought up watching Dora but there was a very definite time when they had enough of the repetition and static animation style of the series. The Dora formula was easily parodied in "Saturday Night Live"'s "Maraka" by Robert Smigel which made us realize how unwatchable Dora had become. more ›

TV Junkie: Last Night at the Television Critics Association Awards

TV Junkie: Last Night at the Television Critics Association Awards

Last night the winners of the 2010 Television Critics Association Awards were handed out a a presentation at the Beverly Hilton. Dax Shepard of NBC's "Parenthood" did a very capable job in his first capacity as host of an awards show. Highlights of the night included: a spectacular speech by Tom Hanks, accepting the Outstanding Achievement in Miniseries award for HBO's "The Pacific"; the entire audience singing Happy Birthday to "Modern Family" star Rico Rodriguez; and the characters of kids show "Yo Gabba Gabba" coming out to accept the award for Outstanding Achievement in Youth Programming. It was a great and intimate evening, perhaps because the proceedings were not on TV - kind of a paradox to have an awards show for TV programs picked by TV critics not broadcast on TV. more ›

TV Junkie: Shaun White's $@*! Posse; 'Yo Gabba Gabba!' Returns! No Music Performance at Oscars

We can't believe how incredibly psyched we are for the upcoming season of "Yo Gabba Gabba!" which starts on March 8th (10:30am on Nickelodeon). Featured guests in the first week alone include: Sarah Silverman, Weird Al Yankovic, Black Kids, Jack McBrayer, Paul Scheer, Weezer, Anthony Bourdain, Of Montreal, Mos Def, Devo, The Aquabats, Mark Mothersbaugh, and of course, Biz Markie. See Anthony Bourdain as a "doctor" in the above video. more ›

Tonight In Rock: Rise Against!, Ray Lamontagne, Whispertown 2000, Thanksgiving

Tonight In Rock: Rise Against!, Ray Lamontagne, Whispertown 2000, Thanksgiving

Tonight LA will be taken over by folk-driven rock. As you very well know, we already doled out the opportunity to witness the Experience Hendrix concert at the Greek Theatre. But Maine-based singer-songwriter Ray Lamontagne will be concluding a two-night stint at the Wiltern. And we never thought we'd find ourselves saying this, but Portland's own folk troubadour Adrian Orange, or rather Thanksgiving, will be performing at Echo Curio with experimental rockers White Fang. Also, our favorite children's show host Lance Rock will be taking over Amoeba Records on Sunset for a Yo Gabba Gabba! session of sorts. However, we suggest catching Whispertown 2000 (LAist Review, #2), who will be playing an early show at the Echo with another Rilo Kiley-related act, the Elected bassist Michael Runion. more ›
