So I have this long-standing date every November. I'm not meeting her for drinks, she's not that sexy nor will she kiss me when it's all over. What the hell kind of date is this? It's my annual trip to get tested for STDs, whether I've been naughty or nice, frisky or monogamous. more ›

ScientIST: 20th Anniversary of World AIDS Day

It's hard to believe, but December 1, 2008 marks the 20th anniversary of World AIDS Day. Today we come together as friends and family, as a city, as a state, as a country, and (most importantly) as a global community to educate and inform on the world AIDS epidemic. While others will (and should) debate the politics of this crisis, we here at the ScientIST feel it’s our duty to share some basic Health 101 behind the virus, transmission, and prevention. We turn to the experts at the Center for Disease Control for the latest in on-going research. more ›

There's Always a Catch

There's Always a Catch

Generally chain letters aren't well received by those with day jobs, but we were all ears when a friend forwarded a link about something quick and easy that everybody can do to help fight AIDS. World AIDS Day was on December 1st, but LightToUnite.org is still up and running. As advertised, for every person that clicks on the site, Bristol-Myers Squibb (YAY: Helped cure Lance Armstrong; BOO: Accounting scandal) would donate a dollar to... more ›

Rubber Lover: Best Condom PSA Ever!

What better way to support World AIDS Day than with this brilliant musical enticement to wear a rubber? This commercial is from France, but its appeal is universal. Especially in light of George W. Bush's recent appointment of anti-birth control nutjob Dr. Eric Kerouack to head the federal government's family planning office, it's nice to see realistic strategies for disease prevention and sexual health being promoted.... more ›

Today is World AIDS Day, so get tested

Today is World AIDS Day, so get tested

Did you know that you don't need health insurance to get tested for AIDS and STDs in LA County? The County of Los Angeles Department of Public Health Sexually Transmitted Disease Program is complimentary to its residents. So don't wait. Go and use it. We are not AIDS experts here, but we believe in a simple idea. If everyone would get tested at least once a year, the spread of AIDS and STDs would... more ›
