Many Angelenos assume that Coldwater Canyon Park is just part of Fryman Canyon - which is somewhat true (the 45-acres that comprise Coldwater Canyon Park is part of a 1,000-acre "cross-mountain" park that includes Wilacre, Fryman, and Franklin Canyon Parks) - but whereas Fryman's up-and-over the canyon hike is a well-traveled treadmill/stroller route for superfit soccer moms and gymgoers - a southern turn over to the Coldwater Canyon side leads to a markedly different neighbor. Coldwater is maintained by Tree People, who have made the park their home in exchange for their tenancy since 1977:
It's almost football season! Players are returning to camp, refusing to return to camp, and negotiating contracts as sports bars order extra supplies of wings and beer and hire hotter waitresses.
Feel like the only thing missing from booty bootcamp is the Spanish Inquisition? Does spinning on a stripper pole sound like a great way to get a nasty rash? Don't want to be chased up and down crumbling outdoor staircases by giant mosquitoes and killer bees?
Undoubtedly, some of the best things about living in Los Angeles are our varied terrain, eclectic architecture, landmarks, and fascinating history. That's why when you've hit treadmill and Stairmaster burnout and can't take another day of watching Montel on closed captioning in your gym, taking things outside and into the city's beautiful hills can be a welcome respite from workout drudgery. One great workout walk combines the best of the city with some kick-ass cardio--and some stunning views to boot; it's a walk through Upper Beachwood Canyon and it includes all 6 of the neighborhood's 85-year-old staircases.
Unlike most Workout Wednesday posts, this week's installment refers to more of a workout location than a specific workout. This unique feature is the "Cardio Cinema"—a movie theater within a gym—and is located at the newly renovated Gold's Gym in Simi Valley.
The marathon may be #27 on the list of Stuff White People Like, but it is by no means their exclusive domain. There are many specialized running groups out there that point out the growing diversity of running enthusiasts. One such group is the Los Angeles Frontrunners, which will be hosting its 27th annual Pride Run on Sunday, June 8 in West Hollywood as part of Pride Weekend. The Pride Run this year benefits the Gay and Lesbian Elder Housing. Do the run and stay for the parade!
Today's edition of LAist's Workout Wednesday series was submitted to us by Lori Allen.
One of the most difficult things about running--or any exercise regimen for that matter--is simply getting started. Joining a running group or club is a great way to ease into it, and so today and in future installments of Workout Wednesday, we will explore the many running groups in the area you can choose from. We'll start with Team in Training.
Staring down to the ground from about 20 feet up in the air was nerve-wracking, to say the least. My palms were sweating, and the person holding my ropes (and my very life) on the other end was just as beginner as me.
With year-round great weather, awesome beaches, and a short drive to the snow, Los Angeles is the perfect place to get sweaty.
I’m a sucker for natural scenery. I like a vast blue sky, a sparkling snow-capped mountain, a breezy sprawling plain. But around Hollywood where I live, I find that exercising in the outdoors often means kicking up dust and breathing in smog, only to take in the beautiful sights of dried out vegetation and dog poop.
I’ve always been a worker-outer. But lately, as I’ve spent more and more time on the cardio machines at 24 Hour Fitness, I can’t shake feeling that I’m just a hamster on a wheel in a vicious human experiment. To combat my paranoia and possibly find a mentally healthier hobby, I’ve decided to scope out what else LA has to offer in a weekly series, “Fitness for the Easily Bored.” So far, I've explored Hoopdancing and Dodgeball. This week, I'm going medieval with...
