July is National Parks & Recreation Month, and all month long LAist will be featuring a hand-selected park a day to showcase just a few of the wonderful recreation spaces--big or small--in the Los Angeles area.

A couple of years ago, LAist's An Tran wrote a Workout Wednesday piece about trainer Jenna Phillips' Mission: Possible outdoor booty busters around Los Angeles.
But what about those of us who don't really care for the outside with its wind, rain, bugs, dirt, and slack-jawed yokels? Well, fret no more! Jenna Phillips now offers Mission:Possible workouts in the splendor of the great indoors at several clubs around Los Angeles ...
6 Best Summer Workouts in Los Angeles
Your Daily Thread's Tracy Hepler offers up her picks for the best summer workouts to be found in L.A. on the Huffington Post today. The list is pretty yoga-intensive, from posing for inner peace and outer toning in Runyon Canyon to on the Malibu Pier. One of the quirkiest picks has to be "Running from the Paparazzi," which is running workout-meets-sightseeing tour, taking what celebs do to avoid TMZ to a whole new level for exercise buffs. So what are some other great outdoor workouts to check out? How about running the stairs at the Hollywood Bowl in the morning (when maybe you can catch that night's act rehearsing), or aerial training at Cirque School? Give us your ideas for summertime fitness!
Interview: Jackie Warner of 'Work Out'
Feeling lazy yet? Well, that's why we're here. Ms. Warner chatted with us about getting and staying fit, her upcoming projects, and how you (yes, you!) can take advantage of what her gym has to offer, so that your firmly-held resolutions don't wind up in the same place as your wilted, dying Christmas tree.
Resolutions: Work Out for Free
Does anyone else hear the overwhelming sounds of silence? Where once elipticals whirred and treadmills whizzed, now there are only crickets. From Santa Monica to Echo Park, aerobics studios are feeling a chill wind blow. It seems, friends, as though no one can afford their gym membership anymore.
But an empty wallet is no excuse for clogged arteries, and in fact, exercise will get your mind off depressing stuff like that pesky recession. Here are some ways you can keep your resolution to get in shape without breaking the (already broken) bank.
Photo Essay: Hollywoodland Staircases Walk
In addition to providing you with an excellent cardio and lower-body workout, the Hollywoodland Staircases Walk also has amazing views of the city, the landscape, and two major landmarks (the Hollywood Sign and Griffith Observatory). Throw some local history (concrete staircases joining hilly residential streets installed in 1923 as part of the Hollywoodland real estate development) and a wide variety of architecture and you have more for your eyes to drink in than you bargained for in just a one-hour, 2 mile walk through the charming Beachwood Canyon neighborhood.
TV Junkie: Tuesday
If you didn't watch the late Sydney Pollack's "Recount" on HBO on Sunday (and repeated last night), you really should have. Salon.com did a huge write-up last week so it can only be reinforced that it was a high point in television this year. A great cast, well shot, created a nail biter of a show that perfectly illustrated (with humor) how badly the country was ripped off in 2000, and how low the Republican machine was willing to go in order to make the steal. Look for it to be repeated on HBO again later this week.
Workout Wednesday: Mat Pilates at Easton Gym Co.
After having spent some time learning pilates on the Reformer and Caddilac, I decided it was time to brave a mat class. I had heard they were grueling and was concerned about keeping up with the other students, but it was time had come to dive in and try.
TV Junkie: Tuesday
Fans of "Project Runway" might want to know more details about its move/death to the Lifetime Networks as reported by the Wall Street Journal. Some fans might say, "Oh no, 'Runway' is going to totally make it on Lifetime - I'm still going to have viewing parties at my house, etc." Be aware that the producers that created the show, Weinstein Co., are not moving with the show to Lifetime - can one safely assume that the show will be just as good without the producers that created it?
Hell on Earth, Thy Name is 24S.E.T.
I’ll put up with a lot in the name of health and a trim, firm bod. I’ll run on the treadmill till I want to hurl myself out the 24 Hour Fitness dome window from boredom. I’ll walk up the dusty trails of Runyon in the midday sun. Shit, I’ll even hang upside down from a flying trapeze.
Workout Wednesday: Franklin Canyon
We have one Sooky Goldman to thank for the treasure that is Franklin Canyon, which sounds like a subplot out of "Chinatown":
Workout Wednesday: Feel the burn, LA!
With year-round great weather, awesome beaches, and a short drive to the snow, Los Angeles is the perfect place to get sweaty.

Photo by imacri via Flickr You're still running to Eye of the Tiger? Then it's time to download some new tunes for your run. Most of these songs are much more aggressive than Eye of the Tiger -- Hard Metal Rock, Techno and Industrial. For people like myself, it's difficult to find good songs to run to. Everybody likes Coldplay but you can't really run to it. Here at LAist we like to encourage...
I worship at the house of Petranek Fitness
I went to my introductory session with Andy Petranek one morning while taking a "sick day" at work. I had been searching for a gym that taught Crossfit, a special brand of fitness recommended to me by a friend. I e-mailed Andy to ask about the class schedule, and next thing I knew I was in my workout clothes and standing in the alley between 14th and 15th Streets in Santa Monica wondering what...
