DC Comics Bravely Reinvents Wonder Woman As A Fantasy Pin up For Middle Aged Men
I get it. Wonder Woman's original costume kind of sucks. "But", you might argue, "she's an immortal goddess. Can't she wear whatever she wants?" Sure, but come on, Superman is invulnerable to everything but kryptonite and he wears Long-Johns and a cape. For the last 70 years Wonder Woman has been saddled with a skimpy nightie that only provides zero non-magical protection (and was painfully old fashioned almost the second the ink dried), and an origin story with vast potential that doesn't really make sense. She deserves an update, and like yesterday.
Wonder Woman's Alter Ego Lynda Carter Sings at the Catalina Jazz Club Tonight and Tomorrow
To millions of people, there is only one Wonder Woman: Lynda Carter, who played the iconic role from 1975-79 on TV. No one could better wear those kick-ass red boots, handle the lasso of truth and beat up bad guys without messing up the always perfect coiffure.
Now more than three-decades later, Carter, 58, is enjoying a second career. No, not attending superhero conventions full-time, but as a jazz singer, singing classic torch songs and standards.
Extra Extra: Panty Bandit, Chatsworth Shooting, and a Brit Obit???
- Update on why Ventura Blvd. in Studio City was shut down this afternoon by the LAPD: according to the North Hollywood Police Division, the shooting took place at De Soto Ave and Gresham St. in Chatsworth. Later, the suspect's car was found at the Studio City 7-11, prompting the LAPD shut down the area to search (hence all the helicopters). The suspect was later found in the city of Fontana and was arrested without incident. That is what we call a BUSY DAY.
- And this is what happens when you build a bunch of new condos and raise all the rents: North Hollywood is making an effort to preserve its Arts District by making sure all the artists don't move out.
- Man, Dov Charney's all up in my ass crack! Er, I should say, these American Apparel brand thong underpants are really giving me a wedgie-ache -- maybe Charney should put his ass-cheeks in another man's underpants before he gets his skinny butt sued from here to Downtown.
- Speaking of underpants, there's a Panty Thief on the loose in Palm Springs!! "'He cleaned me out of my Hustler line, all my crotchless panties, g-strings, corsets and bustiers and costumes,' said Bonnie Reiss, owner of Sensuality, A Store for Her."
- What issues are important to the African-American LGBT community this election season? NPR goes to Los Angeles to talk with local bloggers and find out.
- John Edwards hit up Los Angeles today on his campaign tour, where he spoke to a local union, while Hillary Clinton went to church in Compton.
- Apple users are full of themselves: file this in Tell Me Something I Don't Know. They also tend to throw around words like "intuitive" and "aesthetics" when referring to their computers; I throw around words like "douchebag" and "I hate you, you stupid elitist posers!"*
- The AP has written Britney's obituary already.
- Spiderman and Mary Jane broke up! Is Wonder Woman single?
The First Rule of Felt Club
Mom wants to be hip. She's tired of silk scarves from Nordstrom's and Liz Taylor handbags. What she wants this Mother's Day is a monster-appliqué purse and a set of robot-stencilled tea towels, all made by local hipster craftspeople. Who happen to be selling iridescent cupcakes in the parking lot of a comic book store. Ok, maybe not. But you might — and you can tell yourself you're shopping for mom.
Was Wizard World Long Beach Lame?
According to The Beat, yes it was. Despite appearances by "Buffy" and "Firefly's" (and soon to be the big screen version of Wonder Woman) own Joss Whedon and comic book icon Stan Lee, The Beat claims sales were sluggish for exhibitors making them cranky by the end. Their pictures also suggest that the crowd wasn't nearly as large as they usually are for these kinds of events. Maybe everyone is saving up for Comiccon and E3.
