State Parks are not closing after all, but at least six domestic violence shelters around the state have closed due to a small, but devastating budget cut by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger over the summer. That's according to the Domestic Violence Center of the Santa Clarita Valley, which came close to being the seventh such closure.

Is this guy sly or what? More than 160,500 women have served (and died) in the former president’s the war in Iraq, but many find themselves isolated in the male-dominated culture. “This seclusion, combined with the military's history of gender discrimination and the uniquely challenging conditions in Iraq, has resulted in a mounting epidemic of sexual abuse, physical degeneration, and emotional distress among many female soldiers.” Tonight Columbia University journalism professor Helen Benedict will talk about her latest book, The Lonely Soldier: The Private War of Women Serving in Iraq , and will be joined by two of the five female veterans who are the focus of her book and a therapist who has been working with women soldiers returning from Iraq. The free discussion will take place at the American Friends Service Committee (634 S. Spring St., Downtown LA) tonight from 6:30-8:30 pm.

Tonight Chicago-based hip hop artist Lupe Fiasco will be stopping by the recently opened Club Nokia. NY-based singer-songwriter Jonatha Brooke (LAist Interview) will be gracing the Largo at the Coronet. Prolific psych rockers the Entrance Band will be performing at Spaceland with LBC locals the Growlers. And, lastly, Sweden's own the (International) Noise Conspiracy will be playing a rather small room at El Cid. But we suggest heading over the the Echo to catch Canadian experimental garage rockers Women and Swedish psych rock group Dungen.

The annual Women's Conference in Long Beach is going on right now and is making big headlines with Maria Schriver and many others by inspiring and empowering women during this heated election season. The Santa Monica Police Department and LAPD are saying they have a suspect in custody who may be responsible for a series of home invasions of elderly women on the Westside. If all are the cases are truly connected, fifteen reported incidents, mostly within Los Angeles city limits, were committed between May and August (see a map here). The suspect was arrested in Santa Monica on Friday around 3:00 a.m. while preparing to strike again, according to the LA Times.

The Union Rescue Mission downtown accepts donations of new and used clothing; business clothing for men and women are especially appreciated. These items go directly to the homeless and desperately poor individuals and families of Los Angeles. Other needed goods include baby items (cribs, strollers, high chairs, etc.), furniture and housewares. Any used clothing or other items need to be in excellent condition.
