TV Junkie: LAist to Report from the Video Music Awards on 9/13

We've got a few new show episodes tonight, but nothing spectacular - Wednesdays always seem to be cooking night what with "Top Chef" and "Gordon Ramsay's F Word". What we are excited about is going to New York City and covering the MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday, September 13th. We'll be on site and posting video throughout the evening. more ›

TV Junkie: Rest In Peace Karl Malden

We're saddened to hear of the passing of Karl Malden who made it to the ripe old age of 97. While many people will remember him for his roles in Streetcar Named Desire and "The Streets of San Francisco" we urge you to check out his work in Baby Doll, Patton, Fear Strikes Out, and The Cincinnati Kid. Turner Classic Movies will have a tribute evening of films on Friday, July 10th, starting at 5:00pm Pacific. more ›

TV Junkie: 'The Philanthropist' Debuts; More Original Programming from AMC

TV Junkie: 'The Philanthropist' Debuts; More Original Programming from AMC

We loved HBO's "Rome" and its Marc Anthony, James Purefoy, is playing the lead in NBC's "The Philanthropist" which premieres tonight. The series is getting major hype but we haven't received any screeners from NBC which makes us suspicious that the show isn't all its cracked up to be. Purefoy's involvement is enough to get us interested in the first episode - we know we can always switch over to "Gordon Ramsay's F Word" on BBC America if "The Philanthropist" falls short. more ›

Last night late night rehash: Larry David on Conan was great - why don't we see more of him doing this?! Michelle Pfeiffer seemed a little uptight on Letterman - she should feel a little more secure about her undeniable beauty. Was Gavin Rossdale about to do the slip and slide on Conan lat night? He looked completely lost without a guitar, it was painful. more ›

NBC networks will have ad placement from Google the Wall Street Journal reports. The deal will start on an experimental basis and will probably focus on local markets. The same online interface that gives Google AdWords advertisers to local print and radio media will now accommodate TV advertising. There's been a lot of resistance to allowing this access to Google so other networks will be watching this closely. The fear is that the auction system will actually cut advertising revenues and devalue the platform but it would be hard to devalue the platform much more than it has been with some of the terrible programming on it. more ›

Networked DVRs? Yesterday a US Circuit Court made a decision in Cablevision's favor that would allow them to store programming on a networked DVR thus allowing customers who do not have DVRs in their houses, to access the programming at their convenience through their existing set top boxes. Does this mean that advertisers will get short shrift with more people being able to FFWD through commercials? They will probably just get tapped again to pay for targeted ads on the broadcast from the DVR to the home. more ›

We're well into Shark Week 2008! Last night was a lot of fun and there's more to come tonight, I've highlighted the "Greenland Shark Quest" below as the one to watch. If TV sharks aren't enough, of course Discovery Channel's Shark Week website has a bunch of news, scientific info, and games all tied into Shark Week - my fave is "Go Shark Yourself" which is creepy gross and fun at the same time. Once you've exhausted the resources of the Discovery Channel, don't forget the old standby (and incredible resource) called National Geographic, which also has a website dedicated to sharks: tons and tons of cool pics, a shark attack survival guide, and videos including this insane one of a giant octopus vs. a shark! I don't think I've written the word "shark" this many times in one sitting before. more ›

Looks like big media service companies aren't immune to the temptation of outsourcing their workforce - the most recent case is the media metrics leader, Nielsen Co. After taking millions of dollars in tax breaks for promising jobs at a Florida data center, Nielsen has outsourced the positions to an Indian-based offshore provider - makes one respect the numbers Nielsen spews out even less. more ›

NBC is in the news big time this week. First off, NBC's ratings for its Wimbledon Men's Final broadcast was phenomenal - the best in 8 years and the best for a finale without a contending American since '91. more ›
