It's raining, but it's not pouring, and it's not going to, Los Angeles! The big winter storm we were promised yesterday is actually going to be a lot milder than predicted, says the National Weather Service, who have canceled the Winter Weather Advisory formerly in place today for the mountains of L.A. and Ventura counties.
Chill Out: We Aren't Getting a Big Winter Storm After All
You Remember Rain, Right? Well, It's Gonna Fall on Us Tuesday!
Lest the past couple of weeks of summer-in-winter fool you, we are about to be beset with chilly, windy, wet weather more befitting of the actual season. A "wet weather pattern" is poised to develop over SoCal on Tuesday, says the National Weather Service, so your flip flops and short sleeves are getting a one day reprieve.
Seasonal Eats: Winter Wrap-Up & Spring Preview
When I went to the market this weekend, it was apparent everywhere that we're on the brink of spring. Strawberries, artichokes, and asparagus are starting to pop up here and there—not to mention the lovely early spring flower blooms. I was also impressed, though, at all the late fall root veggies and winter greens and brassicas that have supported us all winter, so I thought I'd do a winter-wrap up as a bit of a send-off to the season, and look forward at what we can expect in springtime.
It's Gonna Snow!? How Low Will it Go?
The National Weather Service says we're getting "a very cold storm system" today and tonight, and it's packing "significant and low level snow." In the mountains, they're due for steady snowfall, and when that very cold air mass settles, the snow level will drop to between 500 and 1500 feet tonight and tomorrow.
Snow In SoCal, The Photographic Evidence
Not to be outdone by the East Coast's end of days, Southern California welcomed some new flakes of its own today when snow levels dropped to about 1,300 feet coating Santa Clarita, Valencia and other L.A. surrounding areas. Thanks to all the winter-loving locals who thought to take photos while slipping and sliding.
Plant F-ing: Time to Think About Planting Your Seeds
We will be in the “heat” of spring in just over two months. The days will be lengthening as we pass the December 21st Solstice; you hippie freaks will undoubtedly be worshiping the Mother, and I’ll be looking at new varieties of available seed to put in her. Here are some of my fave vendors whose catalogs that I have dog-eared and love to support.
Blustering In A Winter Weatherland: Record Cold LA
L.A. County set record cold temperatures on Saturday, with windy conditions continuing today, reports the LA Times. Officials issued a wind advisory for the some valley, mountain and canyon areas where gusts are expected to reach nearly 60 mph and the snow level could fall to 3,500 feet according to the National Weather Service.
Too Hot? Get Ready to Chill Out on Local Outdoor Ice Rinks
It might be in the 90s, but it's already the time of year to think about donning some skates and hitting the ice at the seasonal outdoor rinks poised to open around town.
East Coast Winter Storms Leave LAX Passengers in the Cold
Although our palm trees are swaying in the 80 degree warmth, it was wintry snow and blizzard-like conditions that foiled the plans of many travelers looking to leave from LAX yesterday. "At least 38 flights from Los Angeles International airport to East Coast destinations hit by winter storms were canceled Saturday," according to LA Now.
Signs of Winter in the Tejon Pass
Stretching across the border of Los Angeles and Kern counties and tucked between the Tehapachi and San Emigdio Mountains is the Tejon Pass. We often call it The Grapevine, the portion of the 5 freeway that divides Southern and Central California. The recent winter storm kept us nice and warm here in Los Angeles, but our local mountains saw a change in weather. Hello, December!
It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Winter...
Thanksgiving is done, it's back to work, and tomorrow we turn our calendars to December. Of course, we've been grousing for a few weeks already about shops who are hawking Christmas goods and festive holiday decorations have popped up all over town. Coffeehouses and retailers are brewing up seasonal flavors already, and some radio stations put Christmas and Hanukkah tunes in their rotation pretty much as soon as the carved pumpkins got tossed in the trash.
It's Outdoor Ice Skating Season in Santa Monica & Downtown [Updated]
Other big (and colder) cities get ice rinks, so what's there to stop us? Great weather might be one factor, but it hasn't stopped the likes of the cities of Santa Monica and Los Angeles.
Could It Get Any Colder? Yes. A 'Hard Freeze' is Coming!
Valley-ites (and anyone else whose toes are tingling with the chill), get ready to crank up the thermostat, bundle up in the blankets, and pour yourselves a hot toddy. According to the Pasadena Star-News, the "National Weather Service has issued a frost advisory for Los Angeles valleys." That means in the wee hours you'd best "take measures to protect plants and pets from freezing temperatures."
This is Christmas in Hollywood
Sunday's annual Hollywood Santa Parade wasn't that well attended. The LA Times was correct to be skeptical about this year's show: "The parade almost died because of declining attendance, a lack of TV syndication money and a dearth of stars. We'll see how many people show up tonight." One TV news report said 10,000 people attended. That's nearly 40,000 less than last year, albeit 5,000 less than in 2006.
Map of the Day: Hollywood Winterfest & Santa Parade
It's no Macy's Thanksgiving Parade, but Los Angeles' Winterfest and Santa Parade takes place tomorrow in Hollywood.
Hey, It's Groundhog Day! Hey, It's Groundhog Day! Hey, It's Groundhog Day! Hey, It's Groundh--
Okay, so maybe the only time people in Los Angeles gathered around to see how something affiliated with a groundhog turned out was when the Bill Murray-Andie MacDowell movie Groundhog Day premiered in 1993, cementing the comic idea of life on an endless replay loop in our pop culture lexicon.
After-Holiday Airfare Sales
A London vacation for $900 -- airfare and hotel? Cancun for $500? I got an email alert this morning about big after-holiday airfare sales -- and as a frequent traveler who is often frustrated by the price of airline tickets, I jumped at the chance to research some sweet mid-winter vacations.
The Start of the Christmahanukwanzaa Season
Yes, we know it's not even Thanksgiving yet and it's a little difficult to feel holiday cheer in the sweltering 80-degree weather, but Christmas has already begun in the mind of retailers across Los Angeles. In our family the Christmas season always 'officially' started the day after Thanksgiving, when we would put up the lights on the outside of the house. The Grove, however, has dictated the start of the season as tomorrow, November...
