It's almost football season! Players are returning to camp, refusing to return to camp, and negotiating contracts as sports bars order extra supplies of wings and beer and hire hotter waitresses.
Workout Wednesday: Flag Football
LAst Night's Action: Local Teams Slug Opponents
UCLA 67, Washington State 59 - The #5 Bruins returned a favor by knocking off the #17 Cougars on their home court. Darren Collison scored all 18 of his points in the second half and Kevin Love had 16 on 6-of-8 shooting from the field. UCLA improves to 21-2 overall, and at 9-1 in the Pac-10 hold on to first place by a game over Stanford.
LAst Night's Action: Kings See Red
Red Wings 3, Kings 0 - The best hockey team in the NHL was in Staples Center on Tuesday night. Unfortunately for local fans, the worst team in the NHL calls it home. The Kings lost to Detroit for the 17th time in 18 games. Next up, LA hosts Anaheim, then gets some time off for the all star break. That means plenty of rest, since it's not like the Kings will have many players going.
LAst Night's Action: Ducks Fight For Win
Ducks 2, Avalanche 1, OT - Even in a loss, Colorado's Peter Budaj proved why the goalie is the most important player in hockey. He made 36 saves to keep the Avs in the game, while his teammates managed just three shots in the third period and none in overtime. The final shots-on-goal margin was 38-12, so the scoreboard could have been a lot worse for Colorado. Anaheim showed a major improvement over their 16 shots the day before, and their stingy defense didn't mind having Scott Niedermayer back for his third game of the year.
LAst Night's Action: Ducks Clip Wings
Ducks 6, Red Wings 3 - Anaheim piled on three goals in the final period to pull away from Detroit. It was an impressive late surge from a team with seemingly as many players on ice as on the ice. Todd Bertuzzi, Todd Marchant, Mathieu Schneider, and Jean-Sebastien Giguere weren't healthy enough to play, and Teemu Selanne and Scott Niedermayer were still thinking about going out on top. Ilya Bryzgalov had 32 saves in Giguere's...
Last Night's (in)Action - Kings Edition
Yesterday was the 40th anniversary of the first game in LA Kings history. Your Los Angeles Kings celebrated by losing 4-1 to the Detroit Red Wings. Though if you live in LA and are reading this, you’re probably a Detroit fan anyway. Seriously, were there any Kings fans at the game last night? The Kings loss was its fifth in a row after winning the season opener against the Ducks in London. The lone...
LAst Night's Action: Anaheims Beaten By Reds
Red Sox 4, Angels 0 - Josh Beckett was good. Scary good. He threw eight strikeouts and retired 19 in a row in a complete game shutout, the third of his playoff career. That put him second on the all-time list, one behind Christy Mathewson and tied with Whitey Ford and Mordecai Brown. In other words, only one other pitcher has been this good in about 100 years. He was also the only pitcher to...
Extra, Extra - No More Butterflies After Tomorrow
Don't forget to enter our Labor Day Weekend Contest with the prize to see AIR at the Greek Amphitheater later this month. Recent major events for the Los Angeles Fire Department include a fire last night in North Hills contained to a 12 x 12 foot room where a twenty-something male in serious condition with smoke inhalation and an air ambulance rescue for a two-year-old boy who fell from a pony, dragging him near...
Ottawa Can't Duck the Ducks - Game 2 Tonight @ 5 pm
Game 2 goes tonight at the Honda Center as superstar Travis Moen and the Anaheim Ducks host Ray "Don Magic" Emery and the Ottawa Senators. All the buzz thus far has been about how Anaheim's top checking line of Sammy Pahlsson, Rob Niedermayer and Travis Moen have outplayed Ottawa's top scoring line of Jason Spezza, Dany Heatley and Daniel Alfredsson.
Pssst.... The Stanley Cup Starts Tonight in The OC
Hey LA, Welcome to the Stanley Cup Finals! The last time hockey was seen nationally on a channel that you're familiar with was May 19th on NBC. Of course, as everyone knows, that game between the Ottawa Senators and the Buffalo Sabres went into overtime. And somehow, during the overtime, the pucks of hockey were magically transformed into the ponies of the Preakness. In case you’re still wondering who won that series, the Senators...
Butterflies, Burgers, and Bones: A Day in Exposition Park
Some mornings, you wake up in a wandering mood: after a strong cup of coffee and a survey of the weather, we decided to peek beyond the veil of the early morning haze and venture southeast. We forsook the freeways for the more scenic route of Sunset Boulevard, through Hollywood east to Western, then south, south, south beyond the 10, through K-town and past endless strip-mall Iglesias de Dios and pupuserias. Wonderful! As we...
LAst Night's Action: Lord Stanley Moving to Cali?
Ducks 4, Red Wings 3 - Everybody thought hockey in Orange County was like a snowball in hell: Funny to say, totally unrealistic, and full of cliche (remember those "Mighty" days?). Well, it's starting to get a little chilly down south. The Ducks knocked of the "Mighty" Red Wings in six games, surviving a three goal scoring barrage by Detroit in the third period. Anaheim will host the Ottawa Senators in game one of the...
LAst Night's Action: Ducks Close To Cup
Ducks 2, Red Wings 1, OT - Down 1-0 with a few ticks left on the clock, Scott Niedermayer hit the back of the net to forced OT. Tweve minutes later Teemu Selanne scored and gave the Ducks a 3-2 series lead over Detroit. Anaheim could win the Western Conference Finals at home on Tuesday night. Angels 4, Dodgers 1 - LAnaheim swept the Freeway Series by a combined score of 19-4. On Sunday Kelvim...
LAst Night's Action: Ducks Clip Wings
Ducks 5, Red Wings 3 - Reeling from a nasty home blowout and with their best defender suspended for a game, Anaheim pulled off a big win to even the Western Conference finals against Detroit. The Red Wings actually dominated on shots (39-23), but the Angels found the back of the net more often. Angels 7, Mariners 3 - Things are moving along pretty well for Bartolo Colon. The LAnaheim pitcher is 5-0 after starting...
LAst Night's Action: The Beard Gets Trimmed
B-Dizzle Up-Dizzle - LA's last hope is out of the NBA playoffs. The Utah Jazz beat the Golden State Warriors 100-87 and took the series in five games. It was a battle until the end, and we mean battle. There were 50 personal fouls, 31 against the Warriors. Several were flagrants and technicals. Ducks 5, Red Wings 0 - After stealing home ice advantage with a split in Hockeytown, USA, the Ducks were cooked when they...
LAst Night's Action: Plenty For Mom To Talk About
Dodgers 10, Reds 5 - All nine Dodger starters had at least one hit or run scored, giving the team moms something to be proud of. Cincinnati's Ken Griffey, Jr. didn't disappoint, either, going deep on Mother's Day for the sixth time in his career. Ducks 4, Red Wings 3, OT - The Ducks evened the Western Conference Finals against Detroit at a game each and claimed home ice advantage heading into the next two...
LAst Night's Action: Is Beckham Here Yet?
D.C. United 2, Chivas USA 1 - The MLS gets no respect. ESPN and SI.com lump it in with their general soccer coverage. Yahoo! Sports has them listed just below the WNBA. They might not party like their Euro counterparts, but LAist.com is willing to give Chivas USA top billing tonight. So here it goes ... after a scoreless first half, winless D.C. United found the net twice (the second on a penalty kick) and...
Five For Friday: What We're Doing This Weekend
Now that the winds seem to have subsided, we're ready to dive into what promises to be a beautiful weekend, and we're pretty much ready for it to start now. Say it with us: T.G.I.F! Doesn't that feel good? We thought we'd tell you what we were up to this weekend, in case you needed a little inspiration, or in case you wanted to tell us something else you think we can't afford to...

LAst Night's Action: Surprise LA Team In Pac 10 Final
USC 70, Washington State 61 - After loosing to the Cougars twice in league play, the Trojans avenged the regular season by beating Washington State in the Pac 10 Tournament semifinals. USC led most of the way, thanks in part to 24 of 33 shooting from the charity stripe compared to just 6 of 8 for the Cougs. The Trojan's tenacious D also held their opponent to 36.1 percent shooting. Oregon 81, Cal 63 -...
American Idol: Is Melinda Frontin?
So the girls hit the American Idol stage last night, and they proved once again that they can sing so much better than the boys this season. So the question on our minds this morning is whether co-front-runner Melinda Doolittle (heads and shoulders above the pack with LaKisha Jones) is just frontin. Can she really be that meek and unsure about her singing? She comes on stage like a lion and leaves like a...
LAst Night's Action: Ducks Shock Bruins
Ducks 68, Bruins 66 - UCLA men's hoops dropped their first game of the year and likely fell out of the nation's top ranking for the first time in several weeks. A previously undefeated Oregon squad was coming off an upset loss to USC, and pulled an upset of their own in Eugene. For more on the game, check out Henry's post. Trojans 91, Beavers 46 - Perhaps avenging the Trojan's football loss a few...
LAst Night's Action: All You Need Is Love
Magic 91, Clippers 86 - Orlando rallied from a seven point deficit once they started putting more pressure on LA's big men. After going 15 of 19 in the first half, Brand, Thomas, and Kaman only combined for 4 of 17 in the second. This was the Magic's first win against the Clippers in the last 4 games. The Clippers, still without Sam Cassell, are now just 2-11 on the road this season. Red Wings...
LAist watches: Eyes
In fact, it looked like one of those shows that the networks dump somewhere in the middle of the season because they have to honor a contract or they lost a bet or something. Or, they just need something, anything, to fill up the space between commercials.
Mostly Adventurous
In support of the day that is—at least in some circles—the highlight of the week, check below for new releases in music, film and television.
King For Life
Robitaille signed a one-year contract yesterday with the Kings as part of his third stint with the team. While we recognize that Robitaille has played with the Rangers, Penguins, and Red Wings, LAist cannot think of a player who is more symbolic Kings Hockey than Robitaille.
