Funeral Held Today for Slain 19-Year-Old Explorer Volunteer
Funeral services are being held this morning for 19-year-old Cesar Rodriguez, a volunteer with the L.A. County Sheriff Department's Explorer program, reports the Daily News. Rodriguez was standing outside of a residence in Whittier in the early morning hours of August 28 with a friend when a gray Scion pulled up and the driver fired a handgun several times at the two young men. Both Rodriguez and his friend, 24-year-old Larry Villegas, died at the scene.

Toxic Whittier - $7M Deal For Soiled Soil Cleanup
Federal regulators reached a $7-million agreement with companies to clean up a toxic site in Whittier, reports CBS Local. The EPA and Justice Department announced on Friday that an agreement was reached with the 169 parties who used the Omega Chemical Corp between 1976 and 1991 as a recycling and treatment center for hazardous chemicals. Soil and groundwater at the site are, "tainted with Freon, trichloroethylene and other solvents and refrigerants."

Los Angeles County dedicated its first "green" library today in Whittier. The new Sorensen Library is a state-of-the-art facility that was built using recycled materials and includes sustainable features. This 10,655 square foot library replaces the original 1,048 square foot Sorensen Library opened in 1956, once the smallest in the County's public library system.
30,000 Still Without Power in the L.A. Region
Utility crews are continuing to restore power around Southern California this evening. The most recent updates from the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power and Edison indicate that some 30,000 customers are still without power this evening.
As of 5:30 p.m., fewer than 5,000 LADWP customers were affected. Neighborhoods suffering the most impact include Los Feliz (938 affected customers), North Hills (800), Bel Air (372), Mount Olympus (356) and Cheviot Hills (349).
Around 34,000 Without Power in L.A. and Surrounding Region
Beyond the 11,000 or so affected LADWP customers in the city of Los Angeles, Southern California Edison is reporting that close to 23,000 of their customers are without power. The hardest hit area was Whittier with 2,366 outages, followed by Carson and Long Beach with 1,709 and 1,292 outages, respectively.
The utility said demand for energy hit its record peak usage for the year.

605 Freeway Shut Down After Big Rig and Motorcycle Collide
The 605 Freeway just north of Whittier Blvd. was completely shut down for a period this morning following an accident involving a big rig truck and a motorcyclist. A Los Angeles County Fire Department helicopter has been landed on the freeway to take the motorcyclist, thought to be an off-duty Alhambra Police officer, to a nearby hospital for treatment for his injuries. The incident was called in at 8:00 a.m., and a Sig-Alert issued 15 minutes later. The lanes have since been opened slowly, and the Whittier Blvd. on-ramp to the freeway is expected to re-open shortly, according to the CHP.

LAPD Officers Arrested in Whittier in Pistol-Whipping Case
Last night two off-duty LAPD officers were arrested in Whittier and booked "on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon," according to KFWB. The officers, whose names cannot by law be released, were allegedly drinking when they became engaged in a fight outside the Panera Bread Bakery Cafe at the Whittwood Town Center.

Ongoing power outages continue across the Southland this afternoon as the worst of the storm hits. As of the last updates released by utilities, about 13,000 customers are without power between the L.A Department of Water & Power and Southern California Edison.
