Two years ago, baseball took its scheduling out of the hands of the mom-and-pop operation that had done the job for 24 years, trusting a computer program to do a better job. That software would seem to still have a human hand guiding it, as evidenced by the careful attention to such details as ensuring rematches of World Series past: this year, we had Cubs vs. Tigers (1935 WS), White Sox vs. Reds (1919 WS), Dodgers vs. A's (1974 and 1988 WS) — and a rematch of the 2002 Series, in Angels vs. Giants. A lot's changed since 2002: both teams have had their offensive cores age, hitting the Angels hardest, with Garret Anderson, Darin Erstad, and Tim Salmon all suffering steep declines. Teams pitch to Barry Bonds now. Similarly, both teams have absorbed young talent, to mixed success: the Angels successes include catcher Mike Napoli, starting pitcher Jered Weaver (unfortunately sent back down upon the return of Bartolo Colón), and to some degree, the return of Dallas McPherson, in his third major league season, but yet without a full year of playing time under his belt. In this series, the Giants featured youth in the guises of 25-year-old lefthander Noah Lowry and 21-year-old righty Matt Cain. Inbetween, Team Halloween started Matt Morris, the veteran right-hander. But regardless of who was on the mound for the opposition, the story was sadly the same as it's been throughout most of this year: all told, the Angels hit an anemic .224 against Giants pitching in the series. Lost amidst the celebration of Kobe's hoop heroics and the Clippers getting a playoff series win, the Angels and Dodgers have been dropping games, both sporting a 12-14 record after getting beat Monday by the A's and Diamondbacks respectively.

It has been a very busy week and although the weather has been pretty crappy, the play of the local teams have not. First and foremost with the MLB season opening, the Dodgers were picked anywhere from first to third in the division by various sports writers. LAist has always maintained that if the team, how ever hodge-podged it may seem, remains healthy they will contend. Well, we know how that went dont we? Nomar Garciaparra ended up on the 15 day DL from opening day... NOT a good sign. Eric Gagne's elbow is putting his career in SERIOUS jeopardy. Kenny Lofton (at about 100 years old) who was to lead off and patrol center has not played a game yet. The pitching has been spotty at best (can someone PLEASE remind Derek Lowe that he is a GROUNDBALL pitcher?) and the offense has shown flashes. Standing at .500 (5-5) after splitting four games from former Dodger manager Jim Tracy and the Pirates, the Boys in Blue get set to start the rivalry with the hated Giants. We wonder what type of reception Barry is gonna get... PLEASE OH PLEASE do NOT let him get his first homer of the season against us!

However, it was unearned. In more ways than one.

Congratulations to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, on clinching the AL West. While we at LAist admit to a strong Dodger bias, and changing the team name didn't make us think the Angels were an LA team, we acknowledge them as a SoCal team. And we can't help but admire the work that Arte Moreno has done.

Few sports announcers have paid their dues like Joel Meyers. This guy seems to show up everywhere. Listening to the NFL playoffs on the radio? There's Joel Meyers. Watching the Padres-Cubs go to 12 innings at midnight on ESPN2? There's Joel Meyers. Wake up to watch Kansas-Iowa State Big 12 football on Fox Sports Net? There's Joel Meyers. Inadvertantly picked up an MLB Extra Innings Tigers-White Sox game from Comerica Park on Fox Sports Detroit? There's Joel Meyers. Come to bar, and find a Spurs-Hawks game on TV from some local San Antonio station? There's Joel Meyers. Find yourself watching dog frisbee, senior golf, or college swimming? There's Joel Meyers.

These are tough times for the Los Angeles Dodgers. They just went through their second long losing streak of the season, finally beating the Angels 10-5, but find themselves three and a half games behind the Giants and in third place.
