With Joe Rogan's recent calling out of Carlos Mencia's joke-stealing habit, comedy has been a bit more interesting lately. This weekend, Rogan is performing twice at The Improv, and a few miles away, Mencia will be safe from him at The Comedy Store, where Rogan has been banned due to Mencia's feelings that he was "physically threatening." A recent foray into Hollywood found LAist sampling the sushi at one of the newer strip mall spots. Sushi Q, much like many other in its vein, could get easily lost in the fray of mini-malls in this part of town. Sunset at Cherokee isn't exactly known for its chic atmosphere, which is perhaps why it would seem the best way to sample Sushi Q is to do it take-out style. We had some time to kill, though, and took a seat inside its plain, almost sterile-looking, walls. There was some cool alt-rock music playing (maybe a little too loudly for some, but we didn't mind so much) and a super-friendly employee who took our order at the counter. She knew the menu well, and could explain all the items and their ingredients by memory, which was great. Sushi Q has all sorts of standard, mainstream Japanese fare (although they call themselves a "Japanese Fusion Cafe"), such as tempura, udon noodles, teriyaki, and basic sushi. From their extensive list of rolls we chose the "Jessica," which has shrimp tempura, avocado, and cucumber inside, with salmon, tuna, and avocado on the outside. It was quite tasty and nicely presented, although it seemed to also have the imitation crab mix some places are likely to use in California and other rolls, which is a flavor we don't typically care for, and wasn't listed on the menu as an ingredient. We also tried a Chef's Choice dish, with six pieces of sushi (tuna, salmon, yellowtail, and shrimp-pictured) and 5 pieces of the Crunch roll. The sushi was fresh, although the cuts were very thin, with the yellowtail being paper-thin and the least satisfying. We think Sushi Q will do well for take-out and delivery, and is a nice place to go if not all the diners in your group care for seafood or sushi.
