The Los Angeles Police Commission ruled Tuesday the officer involved in the September 5 fatal shooting of a Guatemalan day laborer Manuel Jamines "acted lawfully," reports KTLA. The shooting occurred when police on bicycles, responding to reports of a man with a knife, confronted Jamines ordering him to put the weapon down. When he refused, fearing for their safety, officers opened fire, killing the 37-year-old. more ›

A familiar scene last night in Westlake, but with a different outcome this time: A Los Angeles Police Department officer ordered a knife-wielding person to drop her weapon, and when they didn't comply, the officer fired at her. Unlike September 5th, however, when the LAPD shot and killed Manuel Jamines, a day laborer who was also carrying a knife, last night's suspect, a woman, was shot at with non-lethal bean bag rounds, according to KTLA. The LAPD is on the look out for two twenty-something Asian suspects who may be responsible for three Westlake area burglaries. On February 24th, surveillance video caught two men forcing their way into an apartment on the 3100 block of West 3rd Street. The Los Angeles Department of Water & Power is currently reporting two large power outages affecting nearly 11,000 customers. 8,000 in the Westlake area and 2,900 in the Boyle Heights have been without power since around 5 p.m. "Crews are on site working to restore power," said Gale Harris, a public information officer with the utility. Tamale Vendor Shot to Death in Apparent Robbery

Friday morning, residents on South Witmer Street in Westlake heard gunfire and not the sound of Cosme Gonzalez's usual cries declaring the foods he had to sell. The LA Times explains:

In what police are calling an attempted robbery, a man in his 20s approached the 46-year-old Gonzalez about 9:30 a.m. and demanded money. When Gonzalez refused, the man fatally shot him in the chest, police said.
An elderly neighborhood resident heard the gun blasts, and "a bullet tore through her bedroom, and when she peered out the window, she saw Gonzalez on his hands and knees, bloody, crying for help." Other witnesses saw the assailant "running west between buildings after the shooting," but police are asking for more help in locating the suspect. more ›

Just like yesterday, when we announced that while the federal government can rob medical marijuana dispensaries, citizens can't, we find that LAPD officers are not allowed to rob drug dealers. In a separate case from the widely known Rampart Division Scandal, a group of rogue officers held up at least 30 drug dealers in a two year period ending in 2001 according to CBS2 News. After the robberies, which included taking the drugs, money and anything that look valuable, the officers would split the loot, sell the drugs to another dealer and proceed to split those profits (so wait, did they ever rob the dealer they dealt to?). more ›
